Penguins Hold On Late To Take 73–68 Decision

Otters come back from 15 down to tie in 2019 home opener

SEASIDE, Calif. — A fast start and a methodical Otter comeback fell just short as Dominican University held on late to steal Cal State Monterey Bay's women's home opener, 73–68, Sunday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) led three Otters in double figures with 16 points. Junior Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) chipped in 10 points, seven rebounds and a career–high five steals.

After CSUMB raced to an early lead, Dominican caught fire, using a 20–0 run to take it's biggest lead at 36–21 midway through the second quarter. The Otters methodically chipped away at the deficit, finally catching the Penguins at 64–64 when freshman Lizzy Benton (Thousand Oaks HS) followed a fast break steal and layup with her first 3–pointer midway through the fourth quarter.

The defense clamped down, giving CSUMB 12 opportunities to tie or take the lead over the last six minutes, but the Otters couldn't get the shot they need to fall. Marisa Mondave made four free throws in the final 10 seconds to seal the win.
 

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Marisa Mondave made a pair of free throws with five seconds left to extend the Dominican lead to 73–68, icing the game.

A THIEF AMONGST THE KELP… Camille Parker grabbed a career–high five steals Sunday against Dominican. She is the first Otter to accomplish that feat since Chyna Dews took five from Chico State on Jan. 17, 2019.

PARKER JOINS THE 300 CLUB… Camille Parker pulled down a team–high seven rebounds Sunday versus Dominican to become the 13th player in Otter history to record 300 rebounds in her career (305). She needs seven more boards to pass Natalie Franka (2004–07) for 12th place and 21 more to earn a spot in the Top 10. In case you're wondering, Krista Herr (2005–08) owns the Otter record with 643.

SWEET 16… Freshman Katie Fitzgerald has opened her collegiate career by scoring 16 points in each of the first two games.

THE LAST WORD… "Today was a tough one. When you battle  to tie a game up in the fourth quarter, you always want to see your kids get the win. We have a lot of new and young players getting minutes, so we are still working out some natural kinks. There's a lot we can learn from this game to get the outcome we're looking for, but the one thing our team does is continue to battle and show resiliency. THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude a brief 2–game homestand by hosting Cal Poly Pomona in a CCAA–opening doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
