Newcomers Shine For Otters In Season–Opener At FPU

Sylvia Vartazarian (18 pts) and Katie Fitzgerald (16 pts) have bigs games in 67–61 loss

FRESNO, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay showed lots of spark, but difficulties at the free–throw line proved too much to overcome in a 67–61 season–opening loss to Fresno Pacific Thursday night in the FPU Special Events Center.

CSUMB got a combined 34 points from a pair of promising newcomers as Glendale College transfer Sylvia Vartazarian and freshman Katie Fitzgerald (Mater Dei HS) went for 18 and 16 points respectively in their first collegiate games. Sophomore Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) added 10 points.

CSUMB stayed within striking distance for the entire game. But the Otters went 9–for–19 from the line, a performance that kept them from getting over the hump late.

Nevertheless, the Otters never let Fresno get away and had three shots to tie trailing 64–61 inside the final three minutes. But they couldn't get any of their final five field goal attempts to fall—and missed a pair of free throws—over that span and the Sunbirds made three late free throws to account for the final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Felicia Dourva grabbed a missed 3–point attempt by Camille Parker with five seconds remaining and Fresno up 65–61.

MAKING A GREAT FIRST IMPRESSION… Sylvia Vartazarian (18 points) and Katie Fitzgerald (16) points enjoyed two of the biggest debutante performances in Otter women's basketball history. Fitzgerald is the first Otter to score as many as 16 points in her debut since Michelle Santizo scored 16 against Western Oregon on Nov. 20, 2009. Helen Suarez set the Otter newcomer record with 24 points in a double–overtime win against the University of Mary on Nov. 15, 2008.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Sylvia Vartazarian 18; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker/Ashley Reynoso/Sylvia Vartazarian 6; ASSISTS: Katie Fitzgerald 4; BLOCKS: Sylvia Vartazarian 1; STEALS: Camille Parker 4.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm proud of our ladies for battling tonight. Fresno is a experienced crew that plays hard and is very good. We played hard and executed our game plan to the best of our ability. We forced a lot of turnovers. Luckily, the things we did not do so well tonight are fixable and in our control. So we will watch the film, rest, prepare and we'll back at it for another tough one on Sunday. " – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return to Seaside to host Dominican University in their home opener Sunday (Nov. 17) in The Kelp Bed. Tip–off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
