East Bay Holds Off Otter Rally To Earn 5–Set Win

Big nights from outsides Jenna Tobin and Taylor Ybanez aren’t quite enough

SEASIDE, Calif. — A hot start and a strong comeback weren't enough Friday as Cal State East Bay took a 5–set "Battle of the Bays" decision from Cal State Monterey Bay in The Kelp Bed. Two decisive set wins weren't enough for the Otters in the 17–25, 29–27, 25–21, 14–25, 15–8 East Bay win.

CSUMB got double–doubles from both of its left side hitters, as junior Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and freshman Taylor Ybanez (Rancho Cucamonga/Los Osos HS) enjoyed big nights. Tobin finished with 18 kills and 12 digs while Ybanez recorded 13 kills and 16 digs.

Friday was a bit of a coming out party for Ybanez, a redshirt freshman who had played in just three sets through the first 20 matches of 2019. She notched her first collegiate kill, ace, block and dig Friday night.

Friday's match was in CSUMB's hands throughout, but the young Otters couldn't find the critical points in crunch time. They had a pair of set points in the second set and led 21–19 in the third.

CSUMB also jumped to a 5–2 lead in the fifth set before the Pioneers put the match away with a 13–3 closing run.

In addition to the outsides, blockers Hannah Haveman (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) and Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) combined to hit .375 (17–2–40) and post 10 blocks.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Kelly Markham and Kara Green combined for a block to close a 6–0 run that turned a 5–2 Otter lead into an 8–5 East Bay advantage. CSUMB never got within two points of the lead again.

THE DEUCE IS LOOSE… Close sets have been the bane of CSUMB's existence over the middle portion of the season. After going 5–2 in their first seven deuce sets of 2019, the Otters have dropped 11 consecutive deuce set opportunities.

FIFTY IS NIFTY… Sophomore setter Sophia Torres passed 50 assists Friday against East Bay. It marks the second time she has reached the 50–assists level and the first since she passed a career–high 56 in a win over Hawaii–Hilo on Sept. 13.

MOVIN' ON UP… With her 50 assists Friday night, Sophia Torres moved past Juliette Ward (536) and into eighth place in the Otter career assist list.

HAVEMAN'S BLOCK PARTY… With three Friday versus East Bay, Hannah Haveman caught Erica Chapa (2017–18) for No. 25 on the Otter career block assists list with 79. FYI, Baylie Pierson added two of her own and is five ahead of Haveman in 24th place.
