Big Nights From Honberger, Tobin Not Enough At SFSU

Kaylie Honberger nets career high, Jenna Tobin reaches milestone in 4–set loss

SAN FRANCISCO — Big nights from outside hitters Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) and Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) weren't enough to help the Otters complete a big comeback effort at San Francisco State as the Gators held on for a 27–25, 25–21, 15–25, 25–21 win Saturday night in The Swamp.

Honberger put down a career–high 15 kills and Tobin added 17 to go over the 500 mark for her career. Their efforts helped the Otters hit .258 for the match, their third best attacking night of the season.

But youth continued to take its toll as the young Otters continue learning how to pull out close sets. Needing to win the fourth set to extend the match, the Otter dug deep to rally from a 19–13 deficit to tie the score twice.

With the match on the line and the scored level at 21–21, SFSU called on its senior Division I transfer, Bailey Johnson, to finish things. Johnson's block broke the tie before back–to–back Johnson kills in transition brought the Gators to match point.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Bailey Johnson's block and back–to–back kills broke a 21–21 tie in the fourth set.

A HIGH FOR HONBERGER… Freshman Kaylie Honberger put down a career–high 15 kills Saturday night at San Francisco State. Her previous high was 14 against Metro State on Sept. 7.

THE OTTER 500, LAP I… Jenna Tobin collected a match–high 17 kills Saturday at San Francisco State to take her over the 500 mark (504) for her career. She is the 13th player in Otter history to reach that level.

THE OTTER 500, LAP II… Sophia Torres reached a 500 milestone of her own Saturday at San Francisco State. Her 36 assists brought her career total to 528. She is just the ninth player in Otter history to reach that milestone.

LOMBARDI DIGS IT… Freshman Madi Lombardi went over 20 digs in a match for the second time this season with a match–high 25 Saturday at San Francisco State. That mark ranks No. 15 on the Otter list for a 4–set match and were a personal high for her in those matches. Her all–time high was 29 digs in a 5–set win over Concordia–Portland on Sept. 6.
