Tough Homecoming For Otters As Stanislaus Wins In Three

Jenna Tobin leads CSUMB with her sixth double–double of 2019

Story Links

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay returned to The Kelp Bed for just the third time this season when it hosted CCAA North Division leader Stanislaus State Friday evening. Perhaps still feeling sluggish from playing 13 of their first 15 matches on the road, the Otters never got rolling as Stanislaus took a 25–19, 25–16, 25–13 decision.

CSUMB stayed tough early in each set, but the Warriors managed to pull away every time the Otters drew near. CSUMB was a close as 18–17 in the first set and 16–13 in the second before Stanislaus took control. The teams played through eight ties and five lead changes in the third set when the Warriors finally put the match away.

Junior outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led CSUMB with 10 kills and 11 digs. Sophia Torres (Temecula/Chaparral HS) passed 33 assists and Alexa Blunt (Napa HS) served a pair of aces.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Bookend kills by Rachel Klopfer helped Stanislaus turn a 9–9 tie in the third set into a 14–11 lead. The Warriors used that as a springboard to an 11–2 run that closed the match.

ANOTHER DOUBLE–DOUBLE FOR TOBIN… Jenna Tobin posted her team–leading sixth double–double of the season with 10 kills and 11 digs Friday versus Stanislaus State. She led the team with a career–high 10 double–doubles as a sophomore in 2018.

TOBIN MAKES A POINT… With a team–high 11 points Friday versus Stanislaus State, Jenna Tobin moved past Tiffany Riggs (2008–11) into 17th place on the Otter career points list at 526.5. Next up is Hilary Heath (2002–03) with 585.5 points.

SOMETHING TO BUILD ON… Although the final score didn't highlight it, the Otters came on to hit .314 (12–1–35) in Game 3 Friday evening. Perhaps that will serve as a launching point for a big night Saturday versus Chico State.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 11.0; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 10; BLOCKS: Jenna Tobin 2; ACES: Alexa Blunt 2; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 11.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2–match homestand by hosting Chico State Saturday night at 7 p.m.
