Late Rally Allows Wildcats To Pull Out 4–Set Victory

Jenna Tobin leads the attack with12 kills; Kaylie Honberger serves three aces

SEASIDE, Calif. — In a match of momentum swings, the last one went to visiting Chico State. The Wildcats used a late rally to prevent a fifth set and pull out a 25–16, 22–25, 25–20, 25–23 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB led 23–19 in the fourth when the Wildcats recorded six consecutive kills to complete the comeback and the victory.

Big runs featured through Saturday's match. After a Lauren Reeves (Atascadero/Templeton HS) kill brought the Otters to within 14–13 in the opener, Chico finished the set with a 12–3 push.

The Otters used a 7–3 run to break open a 14–14 tie en route to their second set win. The third set saw a 13–3 Chico spurt turn an 11–7 Otter lead into a 20–14 Chico advantage.

Neither team could gain a foothold in the fourth set until a Mollin Helfrich (Pinole/Salesian Prep) ace and a Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) kill gave CSUMB leads of 22–18 and 23–19. In the end, that served only to set the table for the final Chico comeback.

Tobin led the Otters with 12 kills. Sam Chavez (Sacramento/St. Francis HS) led the defense with 11 digs. Kaylie Honberger (Rocklin/Whitney HS) led a strong CSUMB night at the service line with three aces.
 

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… bookend kills by Kim Wright started and finished a 6–0 run that rallied Chico from 23–19 down to win the fourth and final set.

THEY'RE ACES… Led a by season–high three from Kaylie Honberger, Otters served 12 aces Saturday versus Chico State. That tied for the third most ever by CSUMB in a 4–set match. If you're keeping score at home, the CSUMB record for a 4–set match is 14 aces in a win over Stanislaus State on Nov. 2, 2007.

THE 500 CLUB… With 12 kills Saturday versus Chico State, junior Jenna Tobin brings her career total to 477. She needs 23 more to become the 14th player in CSUMB history to record 500 kills.

THE FIVE 100 CLUB… Five Otters — Jenna Tobin (198), Kaylie Honberger (132), Baylie Pierson (117), Hannah Haveman (110) and Mollin Helfrich (109) — have collected at least 100 kills in 2019. It's the earliest in a season five Otters have reached that level since 2012. That year, Julia Ashen, Jessica Malcolm, Janai Johnson, Victoria Clardy and Lacee Ventura were members of that exclusive club.
