Stanislaus Pulls Away Late To Take 61–51 Decision

Serena Toney explodes for 16 points in her first collegiate start to lead CSUMB

SEASIDE, Calif. — A big game by freshman guard Serena Toney (Seattle/Roosevelt HS) wasn't quite enough to get Cal State Monterey Bay over the hump as visiting Stanislaus State pulled away in the final four minutes to earn a 61–51 decision Saturday afternoon in The Kelp Bed.

Toney, who walked on to the Otter basketball team from the Otter soccer team, made her first collegiate start a memorable one by leading CSUMB with a season–high 16 points, including four 3–pointers. Junior forward Yolanda Ealy (Long Beach Poly/L.A. Valley College) added 11 points and eight rebounds.

CSUMB built three 8–point leads in the second quarter only to see Stanislaus battle back to take a 32–28 lead at intermission. The teams traded leads three times in the second half. The Otters were in position for the win until Stanislaus closed the game with an 11–2 in the final 3:58.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Caprina Pipion made the first of two free throws with 32 seconds remaining to give the Warriors a 60–51 lead.

FROM OUT OF NOWHERE… It's a coaching axiom that every player should be ready in case her number is called. Serena Toney took that advice and ran with it Saturday afternoon. Toney had played a grand total of 37 minutes and scored just two total points in seven appearances through the season's first 11 games. Saturday versus Stanislaus, she played 26 minutes, scored 16 points and passed two assists. All of those are career highs.

SWEET 16… Not only did Toney lead the team with 16 points Saturday afternoon, she became just the third different Otter to reach that level this season. Jordana Price has reached the 16–point mark three times and Camille Parker has done it once.

EIGHT IS NOT ENOUGH… The three 8–point leads earned by the Otters Saturday afternoon—the last at 21–13 with 7:54 remaining in the second quarter—represent the biggest leads held by the Otters in a game this season.

ON THE REBOUND… CSUMB out–rebounded Stanislaus 38–33 for the game Saturday. It marks the fifth time in 12 games the Otters have out–rebounded an opponent

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Serena Toney 16; REBOUNDS: Yolanda Ealy 8; ASSISTS: Chyna Dews 4; BLOCKS: Yolanda Ealy 1; STEALS: Siana Fields 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the I.E. for a brief 2–game round trip, starting with a Thursday night twinbill at Cal State San Bernardino. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
