Otters Drop Overtime Thriller In Stanislaus, 93–85

Charlie Tooley scores 23 to lead four Otters scorers in double figures

TURLOCK, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay came within inches of winning in regulation only to fall in overtime, 83–75, to Stanislaus State Thursday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

Junior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) made six 3–pointers as part of his game–high 23 points. Sophomore Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) added 16 points. Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) added 15 points apiece.

The Otters and Warriors traded 14 leads over the first 39 minutes before exchanging 3–pointers in the final minute to force extra time. After Stanislaus took an 80–77 lead on a Matt Bradshaw 3–pointer with 44 seconds remaining, Williams tied it one final time with a 3–ball of his own nine seconds later.

The Otters had a chance to win it at the buzzer, but Tooley's 3–pointer from half court bounced in and out as the final horn sounded.

Stanislaus scored the first three points of overtime and the Otters never again regained the lead.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Andy Cleaves made 1–of–2 free throws to put Stanislaus up 93–85 with 11 seconds remaining in overtime.

BOMBS AWAY… The Otters made 12 3–pointers Thursday night at Stanislaus (No. 16 in the CSUMB record book). It marks the third time this season they have made at least 12 treys in a single game. Including Thursday's game, 11 of the 33 best 3–point shooting nights in Otter history have come in one–plus season under Head Coach Isaac Williams.

ONE THE REBOUND… The Otters out–rebounded Stanislaus 38–31 for the game. It marked the sixth time this season that the Otters have earned the rebounding edge.

GOTTA TAKE CARE OF THE ROCK… Turnovers told the tale in Thursday's loss at Stanislaus. CSUMB's 22 turnovers led directly to 34 Warrior points. Stanislaus out–scored the Otters off turnovers by a 34–17 margin.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charlie Tooley 23; REBOUNDS: Kyle Johnson 7; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Charlie Tooley 3; BLOCKS: Joseph Bosetti/Kyle Johnson 1; STEALS: Chris Turner 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host Cal Poly Pomona and Cal State San Bernardino next week. The weekend begins with a Thursday (Jan. 31) doubleheader against the Broncos Tipoff will be at 5:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
