Pomona Defense Too Much For Otters In 82–48 Defeat

Koen Sapwell, J.R. Schilling pace Otters with 12 points each

SEASIDE, Calif. — For the second time in three weeks, Cal Poly Pomona got off to a blistering start then used a stingy defense to run away from Cal State Monterey Bay, this time to the tune of an 82–48 win Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

As they did three weeks back in Pomona, the Broncos raced to a big early lead, this time 16–2, four minutes into the game. Pomona's stingy zone defense never let the Otters closer than 11 points the rest of the way.

Freshman guard J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) broke out of a midseason slump by going 5–for–7 from the floor for 12 points. Sophomore guard Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) matched Schilling's dozen. Chris Turner (DeAnza College) pulled down a team–high six rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jordan Ogundiran made a pair of free throws with 7:26 remaining to give Cal Poly a 65–40 lead.

PUTTING THE "FREE" IN FREE THROWS… The Otters continue to shoot free throws at a near–record pace. CSUMB went 12–of–16 (.750) from the line Thursday night to run its season percentage to .742. The school record of .745 came during the 2006–07 season..

BOMBS AWAY… The Otters made four 3–pointers Thursday night, giving them 165 through 19 games this season. That marks rank No. 10 all–time in CSUMB history. They have made 419 treys in the Isaac Williams era, breaking the record for most 3–pointers in a two–year span of 416 set by the 1999 (245) and 2000 (171) teams.

BOMBS AWAY, PART II…  The Otters set the school record for threes in a season with 254 last year, the first under Isaac Williams.

JAHVON JOHNSON NEAR 800… Jahvon Johnson moved to within eight points of the 800–career point mark by scoring six Thursday night versus Cal Poly Pomona. He is looking to become the 13th player in Otter history to record 800 career points.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT…POINTS: Koen Sapwell/J.R. Schilling 12; REBOUNDS: Chris Turner 6; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Tommy Kramer/Koen Sapwell 2; BLOCKS: Chris Turner 2; STEALS: Charlie Tooley 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief 2–game homestand by hosting Cal State San Bernardino Saturday. Tipoff is at 3 p.m. as the nightcap of mens/women's doubleheader action.
