Game Recap: Men's Basketball | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Tooley’s 23 Points, Big Second Half Not Enough In 79–72 Loss

Charlie Tooley also passes career–high 6 assists but East Bay holds on for win

SEASIDE, Calif. — Its biggest second half of the season wasn't quite enough to lift the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team to victory Sunday evening as Cal State East Bay held on for a 79–72 win in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB scored 49 points in the second half Sunday, its biggest half of the season and its best since scoring 54 points in the second half versus UC San Diego on Jan. 11, 2018. On the flip side, their 23–point first half was their lowest of the season, allowing East Bay to take a 38–23 lead into halftime.

East Bay increased its lead to 20 points early in the second half before the Otters found their rhythm. CSUMB pulled to within single digits several times in the final eight minutes, but never could get all the way over the hump.

The result took some of the luster from a big stat day by junior guard Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS), who tied his career high with six assists and just missed his career high with 23 points. Both totals were game highs.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… East Bay's Patrick Marr made one of two free throws with 50 seconds remaining to give the Pioneers and 75–64 lead.

THE 20–POINT CLUB… Charlie Tooley became the first Otter to record multiple 20–point games this season with his 23–point effort Sunday versus East Bay. Tooley scored a career–high 24 points at San Francisco State on Nov. 23.

JOHNSON CATCHES MONREAL… Junior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) passed a pair of assists Sunday versus East Bay to tie Steve Monreal for No. 8 on the Otter career assist list with 155. Next up for Johnson is Joe Mitchell in seventh place with 155 helpers.

WELCOME ABOARD, MATE… The Otters got a bit of a late Christmas present Sunday as sophomore post player Callum Kimberley (Perth, Western Aust./Idaho State) made his long awaited Otter debut. His minutes were limited coming off injury, but he acquitted himself well with two points, four rebounds and two blocks.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charlie Tooley 23; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 7; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 6; BLOCKS: Callum Kimberley 2; STEALS: Kyle Johnson 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will conclude their brief homestand and ring in 2019 by hosting Stanislaus State Saturday (Jan. 5) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
