Furious Comeback Comes Up Short As Otters Fall To Stanislaus

Koen Sapwell scores 21 points, makes five 3–pointers in 82–70 defeat

SEASIDE, Calif. — A big game by sophomore Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, S. Australia) and a sizzling second half by Cal State Monterey Bay came up just short as visiting Stanislaus State earned an 82–70 win Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

Sapwell led the Otters with 21 points—his second 20–point game of the season—and made five 3–pointers. His touch helped the Otters make 11 treys in the second half.

Two threes from Sapwell and another from senior Chris Turner (Pioneer HS/DeAnza College) keyed a 13–0 Otter explosion in just over two minutes that trimmed a 24–point deficit to only 11 (62–51) with 8:12 remaining. The Otters eventually fought to within eight points of the lead before Stanislaus held on over the final three minutes to secure the win.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Andy Cleaves knocked down a 3–pointer to extend the Stanislaus lead to 79–67 lead with 52 seconds remaining.

BOMBS AWAY… CSUMB's 12 3–point field goals just missed its season high (13 at San Francisco State on Nov. 23). It marked the third time this season the Otters have reached double figures in made 3–pointers.

WHERE IT RANKS… Saturday's mark of 12 3–pointers is tied for No. 15 on the CSUMB list for treys in one game.

MOVIN' ON UP… Junior guard Jahvon Johnson scored 13 points Saturday (right at his season average) to move past Richard Jenkins and into 15th place on the CSUMB career scoring list with 728 points. He needs just two points to pass Jose Sanchez (2007–09) for 14th and nine points to pass Rocky Steryo (2001–02) for 13th.

WELCOME BACK WILLIAMS… Freshman Jared Williams returned to the Otter lineup following a 3–game injury absence. He reached double figures for the third time with 10 points while setting personal bests with eight rebounds and three assists.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 21; REBOUNDS: Jared Williams 8; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 6; BLOCKS: Jahvon Johnson/Kyle Johnson/Callum Kimberley 1; STEALS: Jared Williams 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the I.E. for a brief 2–game round trip, starting with a Thursday night twinbill at Cal State San Bernardino. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.

GO OTTERS!
