Otters Can’t Cool Red Hot Coyotes In 96–71 Setback

Otters get a career–high 17 points from Chris Turner and 16 from Koen Sapwell

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Host Cal State San Bernardino shot 53 percent from the floor and 40 percent from beyond the arc to roll to a 96–71 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Thursday night in Coussoulis Arena.

Led by a career–high 17 points from senior swingman Chris Turner (San Jose/Pioneer HS) all 11 Otters in uniform scored Thursday night. But the Coyotes opened a 20–point lead, 47–27, late in the first half and the Otters never found a way back into the game.

In addition to Turner's big game, Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, S. Australia) scored 16 points and freshman J.R. Schilling (Lake Oswego [Ore.] HS) pulled down six rebounds and passed a career–high five assists to lead CSUMB.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Garrett Baggett knocked down a 3–pointer to make it 80–52 San Bernardino with 7:52 to play.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… All 11 Otters in uniform played scored Thursday night in San Bernardino. It marked the first time that all Otters in uniform scored in a game since 12 Otters did so at UC San Diego on Jan. 11, 2014. It's the first time that every Otter who played scored since eight Otters scored in a win at UC San Diego on Dec. 8, 2017.

PUTTING THE "FREE" IN FREE THROWS… The Otters continue to shoot free throws at a near record pace. CSUMB went 14–of–17 (.824) from the line Thursday night to run its season percentage to .7450. That is just 2/1000ths off the school record of .7452 set during the 2006–07 season.

A BAKER'S DOZEN FROM DOWNTOWN… The Otters knocked down 13 3–pointers Thursday night in San Bernardino. That mark is tied for No. 12 in the Otter record book for treys in one game. It matches their season high set at San Francisco State on Nov. 23.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Chris Turner 17; REBOUNDS: J.R. Schilling 6; ASSISTS: J.R. Schilling 5; BLOCKS: Joseph Bosetti/Callum Kimberly/Charlie Tooley 1; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their SoCal sojourn with a CCAA doubleheader at Cal Poly Pomona Saturday (Jan. 12). The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
