Tough Night For Otters In 79–47 Loss At Cal Poly Pomona

Charlie Tooley scores 14, Jared Williams grabs 6 rebounds

POMONA, Calif. — Very little went right for Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night as the Otters fell behind early and never made it a game in a 79–47 loss to Cal Poly Pomona in Kellogg Arena.

The tale of this game was told in two statistics as the Otters committed a season–high 26 turnovers and shot a season–low 31.1 percent from the floor. Cal Poly, meanwhile, entered the game shooting just 43 percent from the field but connected on 51 percent (28–for–55) Saturday night.

Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) led the Otters with 14 points.  Jared Williams (Eastvale/Roosevelt HS) grabbed six rebounds. Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) passed five assists.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… William Christmas made a layup with 7:33 remaining to make it 61–34 Broncos.

JOHNSON IN STERYO… Jahvon Johnson scored seven points Saturday night to pass Rocky Steryo for No. 13 on the CSUMB career scoring list with 738 points. Next up is Augie Johnston in 12th place at 848 points.

START ME UP… Chris Turner made his second career start and first of the season Saturday night in Pomona. The senior forward finished with nine points, one rebound and two steals in 26 minutes

ON THE LOWDOWN… It was a tough night for the Otter offense as it failed to reach 50 points for just the sixth time since moving to the NCAA Division II level. The last time it happened came in a 52–39 loss at Sonoma State on Feb. 11, 2017.

PERHAPS THE BALL WAS SLIPPERY… Not only did the Otters turn the ball over a season–high 26 times, they forced 19 Bronco turnovers as well. That mark is one shy of the season high in forced turnovers for the Otter defense. CSUMB turned San Francisco State over 20 times on Nov. 23.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Charlie Tooley 14; REBOUNDS: Jared Williams 6; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson 5; BLOCKS: Callum Kimberley/Jared Williams 1; STEALS: Chris Turner 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host Chico State on Thursday (Jan. 17) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
