Otters Break Through In Impressive 81–74 Win Over Chico

Jahvon Johnson, Chris Turner lead a total team effort with 19 points apiece

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball used a total team effort to earn an impressive 81–74 win over visiting Chico State Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and Chris Turner (San Jose/Pioneer HS) led the way with 19 points apiece, but Thursday's victory was far from a two–man operation. The Otters earned their first win of the campaign with contributions from everybody.

All 10 Otters who saw action grabbed as least one rebound Thursday night. Eight of the 10 contributed to the scorline. Another six Otters passed at least one assist.

But there is no denying that Turner and Johnson led the way. Turner's 19 points were a career high. He added six rebounds and a career–high three blocks in just 21 minutes of action.

Johnson added five boards and four assists to his 19–point effort.

The Otters led for nearly 36 of the game's 40 minutes. They took the lead for good at 14–12 on a Johnson jumper just six minutes into the game. They expanded their lead to as many as 14 points in the first half and 13 points in the second. In fact, Chico never held the ball within a possession of the lead after another Johnson jumper made it 18–13 with 11:09 remaining in the opening frame.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Chris Turner blocked a Kevin Warren jumper and grabbed the rebound with eight seconds remaining and the Otters leading, 79–72.

WE LOVE THE 80s… The 80s have been incredibly friendly territory for the Otters in recent history. With Thursday's 81–74 win over Chico State, CSUMB owns a 42–9 (.824) mark in its last 51 games when scoring at least 80 in regulation dating to the 2007–08 season.

IN THE LEAD, PART I… The Otters took their biggest lead in any game this season by grabbing a 14–point advantage (32–18) 14 minutes into the first half. It was their largest lead in a game since taking a 44–21 lead (23 points) at Humboldt State on Dec. 31, 2016.

IN THE LEAD, PART II… CSUMB's 8–point lead at the half (40–32) was its biggest halftime lead of the season. It marked their biggest halftime lead since a 41–26 (15 points) edge at Sonoma State on Jan. 19, 2018.

PUTTING THE "FREE" IN FREE THROWS: The Otters continue to shoot free throws at a record pace. CSUMB went 15–of–19 (.789) from the line Thursday night to run its season percentage to .746. The school record of .745 came during the 2006–07 season.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson/Chris Turner 19; REBOUNDS: Charlie Tooley 8; ASSISTS: Jahvon Johnson/Charlie Tooley 4; BLOCKS: Chris Turner 3; STEALS: None.

THE LAST WORD… "On the surface it's one win, but for this young group of guys it was a confidence booster that can build towards what we want to become." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their weekend homestand by hosting Humboldt State Saturday (Jan. 19) as part of a CCAA doubleheader. The women will tip-off at 1 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 3 p.m.
