Otters Play Well, But Penguins March On To Win

Jordan Price scores a career–high 29 points but Dominican holds on late, 81–69

SAN RAFAEL, Calif. — Visiting Cal State Monterey Bay played its best game of the season, but it wasn't quite enough in the end as Dominican University pulled away late to take an 81–69 victory Wednesday afternoon in The Conlan Center.

CSUMB got a career–high 29 points from senior guard Jordana Price (Seattle/Inglemoor HS) and a season–high 13 from freshman guard Chyna Dews (Venice HS). But that wasn't enough to offset a 35–point, 11–rebound double–double from Natalie Diaz, the nation's leading scorer at 30.8 points per game.

CSUMB led well into the second quarter and pulled to within one point twice in the fourth. But it seemed as if every time the Otters hit a big shot, the Penguins responded with one of their own. Dominican finally put the game away when Julia Raza hit a pair of free throws to make it 77–66 with 1:26 remaining.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Alana Scott made a pair of free throws to give Dominican and 79–66 lead with 1:13 to play.

THAT GIRL WAS ON FIRE… Not only were the 29 points a career high for Jordana Price, they rank No. 3 in the CSUMB record book for points scored in a game. They are the most points scored by an Otter since Alma Lopez went for 33 against San Francisco State on Feb. 27, 2008. In case you're curious, Dana Andrews set the CSUMB record with 41 points at Cal State Dominguez Hills on Feb. 22, 2008.

MORE PROOF THAT THE PRICE IS RIGHT… Wednesday's 29–point effort at Dominican was the second 25–plus point game for Jordana Price this season. She joins Dana Andrews (5 times) and Aubri Smith (2 times) as the only players in Otter history to post two such games.

ALMOST A DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLE… The Otters came tantalizingly close to not just one but two double–doubles Wednesday afternoon at Dominican. Jordan Price added nine rebounds to her 29 points. Camille Parker, meanwhile, just missed her first career double–double with eight points and a career–high nine rebounds.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordana Price 29; REBOUNDS: Camille Parker/Jordana Price/Ashley Reynoso 9; ASSISTS: Siana Fields/Camille Parker 4; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Yolanda Ealy/Siana Fields 2.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm proud of the growth of the ladies and the continuous effort to fight. Hats off to Natalie Diaz and Dominican. She is tough. We knew coming in she would be a tough guard and she was on–point today. We will continue to work and grow on us and what we want to be good at, especially late in the game situations. We will take these few days to rejuvenate and get back at to prepare for East Bay."  – CSUMB Head Coach CJ Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will ring out 2018 by hosting Cal State East Bay for a CCAA doubleheader on Sunday, Dec. 30 in The Kelp Bed. The women will tipoff at 1 p.m. and the men will tipoff at 3 p.m.
