Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Two Halves Don’t Make A Whole For Otters In Loss To L.A.

Otters rally to win second half, but hot start lifts L.A. to 62–42 win

SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team played one of its best halves of the season Sunday afternoon, but it wasn't enough to overcome a hot start by visiting Cal State L.A. in a 62–42 Golden Eagle win in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters out–scored L.A. 28–21 in the second half, it's best margin in a half this season. But the Golden Eagles shot 52 percent from the floor and 85 percent from the line in the first 20 minutes to build a 41–14 lead at the break. It proved to be too much to overcome.

CSUMB trailed by 32 points (48–16) early in the third quarter before catching fire, finishing the period on a 16–2 run to pull to within 18. The Otters trimmed the deficit to just 53–39 early in the fourth quarter but would get no closer.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Rachel DiRegolo made a layup with 2:44 remaining to give L.A. a 57–39 lead.

THE PRICE IS RIGHT… Senior guard Jordana Price enjoyed one of her best games of the season Sunday versus L.A. She led the Otters in scoring (14 points), rebounding (6 boards) and assists (4).

FINE CHYNA… After an injury knocked her from the starting lineup over the previous two games, freshman point guard Chyna Dews returned to the first five Sunday and matched her season–high with 11 points.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES… The 14 points CSUMB scored in the first half Sunday were it's fewest in a half this season. On the flip side, the 21 points the Otters allowed in the second half were the second fewest they've allowed in any half this season (20 at Sonoma State on Nov. 24).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jordana Price 14; REBOUNDS: Jordan Price 6; ASSISTS: Jordana Price 4; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Yolanda Ealy 2.

THE LAST WORD… "It's great to see some fight in the ladies. We could have came out the second half the way we did in the first. We have to come out better and not dig these crazy holes that are near impossible to get out of. That is on me. Our inconsistent play is on me and we have to do better." – CSUMB Head Coach C.J. Pace

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will put a bow on their pre-Christmas schedule with a nonconference game at Pac West contender Dominican University Wednesday (Dec. 19) at 2 p.m.
