Young Otters Drop High–Scoring Opener To Central Washington, 96–86

Nine new players debut in highest scoring opener in CSUMB history

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — With nine players making their Otter debuts and a few key players missing due to injury to open the 2018–19 season, Cal State Monterey Bay played the highest scoring season–opener in school history before fading late in a 96–86 loss to Central Washington Friday night. It was the season opener for both teams and the opening game of the CCAA GNAC Crossover Tournament at Coussoulis Arena.

Five Otters scored double figures in the shootout, led by junior guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) with 18 points. University of Nevada transfer Charlie Tooley (Granite Bay HS) added 15 points and five assists.

The Otters led by as many as eight points early before heading to intermission trailing 50–46. Central forged an 8–point lead of its own early in the second half, but the Otters rallied to reclaim the lead at 75–74 on a Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) 3–point play with 7:21 remaining.

But CSUMB went cold down the stretch as Central's Gamuan Boykin got hot. Boykin capped a 23–point, 15–rebound double–double by scoring 14 points in the final 6:27 of regulation to help the Wildcats pull away.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Using the statistical formula popularized by Bill James, the game was statistically over when Gamuan Boykin knocked down a pair of free throws to give Central a 96–85 lead with 34 seconds remaining.

SEASON–OPENING SHOOTOUT… The 182 total points scored were the most in a season–opening game in Otter history. It eclipses the mark set when CSUMB and Academy of Art combined for 178 points in an Otter 91–87 overtime win on Nov. 19, 2013.

COLD FROM DEEP… Not having Josh Kollman the West Region's top 3–point shooter available certainly had an impact on Friday's game as CSUMB finished the night 7–of–31 (.226) from 3–point range. The Otters shot .365 as a team from long range last season, good for No. 2 in the CCAA.

WELCOME TO THE RAFT… Nine players made their Otter debuts Friday night. Statistical stars amongst the newcomers included Charlie Tooley (15 points, 5 assists); freshman Jared Williams (10 points, 4 rebounds) and Joseph Bosetti (9 points, 6 rebounds).

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 18; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti/Koen Sapwell 6; ASSISTS: Charlie Tooley 5; BLOCKS: None; STEALS: Jahvon Johnson/Kyle Johnson/Tommy Kramer 1.

THE LAST WORD… "We're a young team. Six of our guys played their first college basketball game tonight. While there were plenty of things to be disappointed with, I love these guys and believe that it won't be long before we put a product on the floor of which we can all be proud." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude play at the CCAA/GNAC Crossover Tournament Saturday when they face Concordia–Portland in Coussoulis Arena. Tipoff is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
