Late Run Lifts Concordia Over Otters, 80–76

Koen Sapwell leads all scorers with 18 points for CSUMB

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — An 14–4 run inside the final 10 minutes broke open a 2–point game and lifted Concordia–Portland to an 80–76 win over Cal State Monterey Bay in the third game of the CCAA/GNAC Crossover Tournament Saturday in Coussoulis Arena.

The teams played through eight ties and 13 lead changes. The Otters trailed by just two at 55–53 with about 10 minutes remaining when Concordia began to ease away. Despite trailing by as many as 14 points down the stretch, CSUMB battled back in the final five minutes.

But the Cavaliers made 4–of–4 from the line in the final 24 seconds, and that proved to be the difference.

Sophomore Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia) led four Otters in double figures with 18 points. Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) added 14 points and Joseph Bosetti (Red Bluff HS) came off the bench to chip in 12 points and a team–high seven rebounds.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jarrett Gray knocked down two free throws to extend the Concordia lead to 80–73 with eight seconds to play.

ON THE REBOUND… After getting out–rebounded by 11 Friday versus Central Washington, the Otter boardmen took care of the glass Saturday, out–rebounding Concordia 47–38.

SPREADING THE WEALTH… With junior Akli Reese joining the scoring parade Saturday night, 11 different Otters have scored in the first two games this season.

JAHVON CRACKS THE TOP 10… With nine free throws made this weekend, Jahvon Johnson slipped past Steve Monreal (2008–09) and Matt Dalhamer (1999–01) into the No. 9 spot on the CSUMB career free throws list with 190. He needs 13 more to pass Devoughn Lamont (2005–09) for No. 8 on the list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 18; REBOUNDS: Joseph Bosetti 7; ASSISTS: Koen Sapwell/Charlie Tooley 3; BLOCKS: Dillon Autrey/J.R. Schilling 1; STEALS: Kyle Johnson/Koen Sapwell/Charlie Tooley 1.

THE LAST WORD… "We took a step in the right direction defensively tonight. While it wasn't always technically correct I thought we did a better job competing on that end. Unfortunately, we're still struggling to find cohesion on offense, but I believe it's more a lack of familiarity than anything else." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the East Bay area to take on Pac West Conference foe Holy Names University Thursday (Nov. 15) in Oakland.
