Erica Chapa becomes Otter volleyball’s fifth first team All–CCAA pick

SEASIDE, Calif. — After leading CCAA North Division co–champs Cal State Monterey Bay to its second consecutive postseason appearance, senior setter Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) and sophomore outside hitter Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) each earned All–CCAA honors as announced by the conference office Wednesday.

A first team pick for 2018, Chapa was named All–CCAA for the second time. She was a second team selection in 2017. Tobin, a second team pick, was named All–CCAA for the first time.

"I'm so proud of both Erica and Jenna for being recognized for their hard work," says CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart. "After last season ended, both of these young women committed to their process, to improving and being the best they could be for this team. This is well deserved honor for both of them."

Chapa becomes the fifth player in Otter volleyball history to earn first team All–CCAA honors. She joins Julia Ashen (2012, 13), Rheann Fall (2010, 11), Brittany Etchings (2006) and Maddy Underwood (2017) on that exclusive list. She is the sixth player in Otter volleyball history to earn multiple All–CCAA awards.

Chapa enters Thursday's opening round of the CCAA Championship Tournament ranked No. 6 in the CCAA by averaging 9.45 assists per set. Her 860 total assists rank No. 4 on the Otter single–season list. She needs 95 more to match her own 2017 season mark of 955 for No. 3.

For her part, Tobin enjoyed a breakout sophomore season, leading the team with 266 kills in the regular season. That mark already ranks No. 18 on the Otter single season list. She also leads all Otter hitters with 10 double–doubles in 2018.

CSUMB will be in Turlock this week for the CCAA Volleyball Championship Tournament Nov. 8–10 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State. The Otters will open tournament play against No. 15 Cal State L.A. Thursday (Nov. 8) at 5 p.m.
