Otters Can’t Pull Off Second Upset As No. 1 San Bernardino Wins

Otters will head to CCAA Tournament to face Cal State L.A. Nov. 8 in Turlock

SEASIDE, Calif. — Beating nationally–ranked teams on consecutive nights proved to be a bit too tall of an order for Cal State Monterey Bay, which closed its regular season schedule with a 25–19, 25–17, 25–19 loss to No. 1 ranked Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB, which swept No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona Friday night, finishes its regular season 16–9 overall and 11–7 in the CCAA. The Otters will share the North Division title with Cal State East Bay, which swept Sonoma State Saturday night to also finish 11–7 in the CCAA.

The Otters stayed tight with San Bernardino in the opening set before the Coyotes pulled away late for the win. San Bernardino jumped to early leads in the final two sets and the Otters never got over the hump.

Sophomores Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) and Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led a top–heavy Otter offense with 11 and 10 kills respectively. Tobin added a team–high 12 digs for her 10th double–double of the season.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… San Bernardino used a 7–1 run to break open the third set with a 21–10 lead.

WINNING AT A RECORD PACE… CSUMB finished the regular season 16–9 overall for a .640 winning percentage. The Otters are assured of their best–ever winning percentage, breaking the standard of .600 set by the 2010 (15–10) and 2013 (18–12) squads.

TOP 20 TOBIN… With 20 kills this weekend, Jenna Tobin moved into the CSUMB Top 20 for most kills in a season with 266, good for 18th place. With nine more kills, she will pass Anela Visesio's 2016 (271) and 2017 (274) seasons to move up to 16th place.

CHAPA MOVES UP… With 24 assists Saturday night, Erica Chapa passed Nicki Sanderson (824 in 2006) for the No. 4 spot on the Otter single season assists list with 860. She needs 95 more assists to match her own 2017 campaign for No. 3.

DIG THIS… Ashlynne Armstrong totalled 32 digs on the weekend to move up to No. 15 on the Otter season digs list with 382. With 18 more digs, she would join Rachel Cookus (2012–15) and Katie Bos (2006, '09) as the only players to total 400 or more digs in a season twice as an Otter. Cookus also had 455 digs in 2017

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Baylie Pierson 13.5; KILLS: Baylie Pierson 11; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan 3; ACES: Baylie Pierson 2; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 12.

THE LAST WORD… "I know that we had more to give tonight, but we waited until the end of each set to believe we could do what we are capable of and it was too little to late. I am, however, really pleased with where we are at this point of the season and I'm excited to see what we can do in the post season." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to Turlock for the CCAA Championship Tournament starting Thursday, Nov. 8 at Fitzpatrick Arena on the campus of Stanislaus State. They'll open tournament play against No. 12 Cal State L.A.
