Otters Will Play The Waiting Game After Falling To No. 15 L.A.

CSUMB drops quarterfinal CCAA Tournament match 25–23, 25–22, 25–14

TURLOCK, Calif. — The fate of the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team will be in the hands of the NCAA Volleyball committee after falling to No. 15 Cal State L.A. 25–23, 25–22, 25–14 in the CCAA Championship Tournament quarterfinals Thursday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

CSUMB (16–10 overall) now must await the rest of this weekend's results to see if it will remain amongst the top eight teams in the West Region and earn a bid to the NCAA Tournament. The Otters began the week ranked right at No. 8.

The first two sets could have gone either way. In both instances, L.A. pulled out the final two points to hold on for narrow wins. The Golden Eagles eased away to start the third set before putting the hammer down late to quash any thoughts of an Otter comeback.

Sophomore opposite Baylie Pierson (Vista Murietta HS) led a balanced Otter offense with eight kills. Middle blocker Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) and libero Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) led the defense with three blocks and 13 digs respectively.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A 7–1 run extended the L.A. lead to 22–11 in the third and final set.

THE WAITING GAME… If the season ended Wednesday, the Otters would be in the NCAA Tournament field as one of the top eight teams in the West Region. As it stands, they'll have to await results from around the region to see if they'll hold on to that spot and earn their first–ever trip to the NCAA Tournament.

WHEN WE'LL KNOW… The NCAA will announce its selection for the Division II Volleyball Championship Tournament Sunday (Nov. 11) starting at 7 p.m. Pacific time.

CAN YA DIG IT? With 13 digs Thursday night, Ashlynne Armstrong tied Katie Bos (2006–09) for No. 2 on the Otter career digs list at 1,377. Rachel Cookus (2012–15) owns the Otter record with 1,960 digs.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Baylie Pierson 8; BLOCKS: Chandler McKean 3; ACES: Baylie Pierson/Jenna Tobin/Malia Tuatagaloa 1; ASSISTS: Erica Chapa 21; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 13.

THE LAST WORD… "We didn't play the way we are capable of playing tonight and that was a let down. I was so proud of the effort from Chandler and Sam (Smantha Brennan) working hard to go pin to pin—they really kept us in some plays tonight and that was a huge help. Now, we wait and see what unfolds." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters will await announcement of the NCAA  Tournament field. The selection show will take place Sunday (Nov. 11) at 7 p.m. Fans can watch live at NCAA.com or be sure to follow the Otters on Twitter/Instagram (@OtterAthletics) for the latest information.
