Otters Clinch CCAA North Division Title With Sweep

Otters Down No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona 25–20, 25–18, 25–23

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay posted the biggest win in program history Friday night in The Kelp Bed, sweeping No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona 25–20, 25–18, 25–23 to clinch the CCAA North Division title.

It's the first title of any kind for CSUMB volleyball (16–8, 11–6 CCAA) and the second Otter win over a nationally–ranked opponent this season. Cal Poly (21–4, 14–4), like CSUMB, already has clinched a berth in next week's CCAA Championship Tournament.

The match was much closer than the sweep would indicate, with the teams playing through a total of 33 ties and 17 lead changes. But the big plays all belonged to the Otters.

Two kills and a block by Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) snapped a 19–19 tie in the first set. Three consecutive Visesio kills in Set 2 turned a 16–15 deficit into a 20–16 Otter lead.

Jenna Tobin's (Modesto/Gregori HS) 10th kill of the night snapped a 23–23 tie in the third set, sending her back to the line from where she served match point.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENJenna Tobin tooled a block to snap a 23–23 tie in the third set. Pomona could get the ball back over the net on the ensuing point to seal the win.

WE'RE NO. 1… The Otters clinched their volleyball title of any kind with Friday's sweep of Pomona. They can clinch a No. 1 seed in the CCAA Tournament Saturday with either a win over Cal State San Bernardino or a Cal State East Bay loss at Sonoma State.

HOME SWEET HOME… Friday's win over Cal Poly Pomona extended the Otter home winning streak to seven matches. It matches the longest home streak in program history, first set from Sept. 3–25, 2010.

GIANT KILLERS… By sweeping No. 14 Cal Poly Pomona Friday night, the Otters beat the second–highest ranked opponent in school history and the highest since knocking off No. 11 UC San Diego 3–2 on Sept. 17, 2010.

TWICE AS NICE… Friday's win over #14 Cal Poly Pomona was CSUMB's second win over a nationally–ranked team this season. The Otters opened with a 3–1 win at No. 19 Northwest Nazarene on Aug. 24. It marks the second time in program history the Otters have knocked off two nationally–ranked teams in a season. The 2010 Otters beat No. 11 UCSD 3–2 and No. 20 Cal State L.A. 3–1 en route to a school–record 18 wins.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Baylie Pierson 11.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 10; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan 4; ACES: Baylie Pierson 2; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 21.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm so proud of the response from this team. All week we focused on ownership and putting our heart into the work and tonight they played with heart. I couldn't be more proud of that and their character." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 2018 regular season schedule by hosting No. 1 ranked Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
