No Comeback Needed This Time As Otters Beat Stanislaus In Four

Erica Chapa posts double–double, Jenna Tobin leads four Otters in double figures with 14 kills

TURLOCK, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team didn't need an epic comeback this time, winning the opening set then hanging on for a hard fought 25–16, 18–25, 25–21, 25–22 win over Stanislaus State Saturday night in Fitzpatrick Arena.

The win, CSUMB's sixth in a row, keeps the Otters in a tie for first place atop the CCAA North Division at 7–4 (12–6 overall). It sets up a potential first–place showdown with co–leader Cal State East Bay (11–8, 7–4) next Saturday in The Kelp Bed.

Reigning CCAA Player of the Week Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led four Otter attackers in double figures with a match–high 14 kills. Senior setter Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) added a double–double with 44 assists and 10 digs.

After CSUMB raced to a 20–10 lead in winning the first set, Stanislaus (12–6, 5–5) eased away from a 12–12 tie to take the second. The teams played through 11 ties and five lead changes in the pivotal third set before kills from Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) and Tobin sandwiched an Alexa Blunt (Napa HS) ace to put the Otters ahead to stay at 21–19.

Stanislaus had one last chance to rally by grabbing a 10–3 lead to open the fourth. But Kyra Galloway (San Diego/West Hills HS) severed seven consecutive points as part of a 14–2 Otter run that wiped out the final Warrior lead.

ROLLING, ROLLING, ROLLING… The Otters ride into next week on a 6–match winning streak. It's the second longest streak in program history and the longest since they won seven consecutive matches from Sept. 11–Oct. 1, 2010.

TOP 10 CHAPA… Erica Chapa climbed into the CSUMB single season Top 10 for assists for the second time Saturday when her 44 helpers moved her moved her past Dana Grimm (2007) and Whitney Hirst (2016) and into the No. 9 spot with 596. Chapa's 955 assists as a junior in 2017 rank No. 3 all–time.

ON THE BLOCK… With three blocks Saturday, Samantha Brennan (Huntington Beach HS) moved past Jessica Malcolm (2012–15) and into ninth on the Otter career block assists list with 141. With five blocks on the weekend, Chandler McKean moved past Melanie Lashbrook (2008–11) for the No. 5 spot on the career blocks list with 206.
