Otters Find A Way Again, Rally Twice To Upend S.F. State In Five

CSUMB maintains a share of first in the CCAA North, hosts co–leader Cal State East Bay Saturday

SEASIDE, Calif. — In a heavyweight tilt with huge postseason repercussions for the entire CCAA North Division, Cal State Monterey Bay survived a pair of body blows before delivering the haymaker to knockout visiting San Francisco State 27–29, 25–22, 25–27, 25–21, 15–11 Friday night in The Kelp Bed.

With the win, CSUMB (13–6, 8–4 CCAA) regains a share of first place in the CCAA North Division. SFSU (10–9, 5–7) missed a chance to move within a game of CSUMB.

The match was every bit as close as the set scores indicated. Each of the first four sets were tied at least as late as 18–18. In fact, the Otters had chances to close out the first set at 24–23 and 26–25 and played through three deuces in the third set before SFSU pulled out its two wins.

Neither team was able to take a set by the scruff of the neck until the Otters used a 6–1 run to open a 14–7 lead in the fifth.

Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) led three Otters in double figures with 15 kills. Sophomore Hannah Haveman (Parker, Colo./Legend HS) blocked eight balls and added eight kills in her first start of 2018. Senior libero Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) added 24 digs and four aces.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN…  a brilliant up by Ashlynne Armstrong and a hustle play by Anela Visesio resulted in a free ball that miraculously dropped for a kill to extend CSUMB's lead to 13–8 in the first set.

THEY'RE ACES… Ashlynne Armstrong's four aces Friday night versus San Francisco State are tied for the fifth–most by an Otter in a 5–set match. CSUMB's 12 total aces are tied for No. 6 on the team list.

DIG THIS… With 24 digs Friday night, Ashlynne Armstrong passed former Otter All–American Rheann Fall (2008–11) for No. 5 on the CSUMB career digs list with 1,276. She needs 24 more digs to pass Dionna Lucas (2008–11). It's worth noting that Armstrong needed 70 fewer sets played than Fall and has played 59 fewer sets than Lucas entering Saturday's action.

CRAZY EIGHTS… Not only were Hannah Haveman's eight kills and eight blocks both career highs, her eight blocks rank No. 6 all–time in a 5–set match at CSUMB.

WELCOME TO THE DOUBLE FIGURES CLUB… Redshirt freshman defensive specialist Alexa Blunt picked the perfect time to have the best match of her young career. She reached double figures for the first time with 12 digs and added a season–high three aces to boot.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 18.5; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 15; BLOCKS: Hannah Haveman 8; ACES: Ashlynne Armstrong 4; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 24.

THE LAST WORD… "What a battle. We knew it was going to be a tight one. S.F. is a strong team. We match up well with them across the board and tonight we were able to play with a little more composure and confidence when we needed it. We still have a lot to work on and I'm excited for another opportunity at home tomorrow night." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters continue their 3–match homestand by hosting CCAA North Division co–leader Cal State East Bay Saturday. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
