Otters Alone In First Place After 4–Set Battle of the Bays Win

Win streak reaches eight after 26–24, 25–23, 20–25, 25–22 win over East Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey Bay held off a spirited comeback attempt by visiting Cal State East Bay to take sole possession of first place in the CCAA North Division with a 26–24, 25–23, 20–25, 25–22 win Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

The third chapter of the Battle of the Bays had the most at stake, with the victor claiming a one–game lead in the CCAA North heading into the final three weeks of the regular season. CSUMB (14–6, 9–4 CCAA) now holds the rail with East Bay (8–5), Stanislaus State (6–6) and San Francisco State (5–7) in chase positions.

The CCAA lead didn't come easy, however, as all three CSUMB set wins Saturday went down to the wire. The Otters saved a set point in the opener before breaking a 19–19 tie and holding on to win the second set.

Fans could feel East Bay building momentum as it pulled away late to win the third set and take an 8–4 lead to begin the fourth. But the Otters never let the Pioneer get too far away, reeling them in nine separate times in the set before Jenna Tobin's (Modesto/Gregori HS) career–high 19th kill snapped a 22–22 tie and pointed the way to ultimate victory.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHENChandler McKean went up quick in transition for the kill on match point.

OTTERS ARE EN FUEGO… Saturday's victory over East Bay lifted CSUMB's current win streak to eight matches. It is the longest winning streak in CSUMB volleyball history, surpassing the 7–match run by the 2010 Otters.

IT'S LONELY AT THE TOP… The Otters are alone in first place for the first time since moving to the NCAA level for the 2004 season.

JENNA KILLS IT… Jenna Tobin not only led all attackers with 19 kills in Saturday night's win over East Bay, she set a career high as well. Her previous career high was 18 against Concordia Portland (Aug. 31) and Sonoma State (Sept. 18).

DOUBLE TROUBLE TOBIN… Jenna Tobin recorded double figure kills for the seventh consecutive match with 19 in Saturday's win over East Bay.

SHE'S ACES, SINGLE–SEASON EDITION… With a match–high three aces in Saturday's win over East Bay, Ashlynne Armstrong moved into the No. 9 spot for aces in a season with 35. She is two away from her personal career high of 37 aces set last season.

SHE'S ACES, CAREER EDITION… With a match–high three aces in Saturday's win over East Bay, Ashlynne Armstrong tied Dionna Lucas (2008–11) for the No. 4 spot on the CSUMB career aces list with 116. Rheann Fall (2008–11) owns the Otter record with 132 aces.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 21.0; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 19; BLOCKS: Four Otters 2; ACES: Ashlynne Armstrong 3; DIGS: Erica Chapa 17.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm so proud of the work this program continues to put in night after night. East Bay is a great team and dug a lot of balls. We had to stay composed and confident and we did when it counted. We have a great opportunity to get better this week and I can't wait to get after it again." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their 3–match homestand by hosting Humboldt State Sunday, Oct. 21. First serve is scheduled for 1 p.m.
