Win Streak Reaches Nine With Sweep of Jacks

Otters maintain CCAA North Lead, clinch at least a share of second

SEASIDE, Calif. — Cal State Monterey continued its journey into uncharted waters Sunday, running its school–record winning streak to nine matches with a 25–17, 25–12, 25–18 sweep of visiting Humboldt State in The Kelp Bed.

The win locks up no worse than a share of second place in the CCAA North for the division–leading Otters (15–6, 10–4 CCAA). With four matches remaining, the Otters have a 3–game lead over Cal State East Bay, whom they will meet in their next match with a chance to clinch the division title.

As for Sunday's match, CSUMB hosted a Humboldt side playing its third match in three days—the previous two in San Diego. The Otters led for virtually the entirety of the first set and all of the second.

The Lumberjacks battled to open the third, but a Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) kill began a 5–0 run that snapped a 13–13 tie. Humboldt never got closer than four points the rest of the way.

Tobin lead a balanced offense with 10 kills. Senior libero Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) added 15 digs and tied a CSUMB 3–set record with six aces.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… bookend kills by Jenna Tobin highlighted a 5–0 run that snapped a 13–13 tie in the third set.

PLAYOFF BOUND…AGAIN: The Otters will be heading back to the CCAA Tournament for the second consecutive season. 2017 and 2018 are the first two seasons of postseason volleyball in CSUMB's NCAA era.

WINNING WAYS… At 15–6 overall, CSUMB is now guaranteed a winning record for the second consecutive season. It marks the first time in Otter volleyball history the team will post consecutive winning seasons. The Otters were 14–13 in 2017.

ARMSTRONG THE ACE… Already one of the top servers in CSUMB history, Ashlynne Armstrong etched her name in the CSUMB serving record book again by tying the school record with six aces in a 3–set match. She tied the mark first established by Dionna Lucas in 2010 and duplicated by Erica Chapa last season. For the record, Armstrong set the overall CSUMB record with seven aces (in a 5–set win) at Chico State on Oct. 5.

ADDITIONAL ARMSTRONG ACES… With six aces Sunday, Ashlynne Armstrong vaulted five players into the No. 4 spot on the Otter season list with 41 aces in 2018. Brittany Etchings (42 in 2007) and Rheann Fall (44 in 2009) hold the next two spots.

SETTING THE STANDARD… With 35 helpers Sunday, Erica Chapa went over 700 assists for the second consecutive season (727). She joins Kelsey Johnston (2012–13) and Nicki Sanderson (2004, '06) as the only Otters to reach 700 assists twice.

DIG THIS… Ashlynne Armstrong went over 1,300 career digs Sunday (1,304) and tied Brittany Etchings for No. 3 on the CSUMB career digs list.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jenna Tobin 11; KILLS: Jenna Tobin 10; BLOCKS: Chandler McKean 4; ACES: Ashlynne Armstrong 6; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 15.

THE LAST WORD… "This has been a weird week for us. We adjusted our training and we did a good job staying focused coming out and executing today. I was really pleased with our serving and our defensive effort. This team is so hungry and I'm excited for this upcoming week with a great road test." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a pair of matches with huge postseason implications for all involved teams. The weekend begins (Friday (Oct. 26) at Cal State East Bay. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
