Big Comeback Fall Just Short In 5–Set Loss At East Bay

Otters rally from 0–2 only to fall in the final set.

HAYWARD, Calif. — Big comebacks have been a theme for Cal State Monterey Bay this season. The Otters put on another one Friday night, but it came up just short in a 25–18, 25–23, 22–23, 23–25, 15–2 loss at Cal State East Bay in Pioneer Gym.

The setback ended CSUMB's school–record 9–match winning streak and leaves the Otters at 15–7 overall and 10–5 in the CCAA. East Bay stays alive in the race for the CCAA North Division title at 13–11 and 9–7.

The Otters can clinch no worse than a tie for the division title with a win Saturday at San Francisco State.

Senior middle blocker Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) led four Otters in double figures with 14 kills. Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) added a double–double with 12 kills and 22 digs.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… East Bay opened the fifth set with a 6–1 run.

COMEBACK KIDS (ALMOST)… The Otters nearly came from 0–2 down to win for the third time this season. Prior to this season, they had come from 0–2 down to win just five times in their history.

ACES EMPTY… The Otters entered Friday's match ranked No. 17 nationally in service aces per set. They managed just a single ace against East Bay.

DOUBLE THE FUN… Jenna Tobin posted her team–leading eighth double–double of the season with 12 kills and a career–high 22 digs Friday at East Bay. It was Tobin's sixth double–double in the last nine matches.

ARMSTRONG HIGH FIVE… With 18 digs Friday night at East Bay, Ashlynne Armstrong vaulted from No. 8 to No. 5 on the CSUMB single–season digs list with 473. She is tied with Rachel Cookus (2012) and needs just seven more to pass Cookus' 2012 season for No. 4.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Chandler McKean 14; BLOCKS: Erica Chapa/Chandler McKean/Anela Visesio 3; ACES: Kyra Galloway 1; ASSISTS: Erica Chapa 54; DIGS: Jenna Tobin 22.

THE LAST WORD… "East Bay played great; credit to their team and their seniors. There were times during that match that we played really well, but we broke down at crucial times with things that make us who we are: communication, effort and poise. We are better than how we finished tonight and I am confident this team will respond—they always do." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters finish their Bay area road trip at San Francisco State Saturday night. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
