Otters Miss Another Chance To Claim CCAA North Title

CSUMB falls in three at San Francisco State

SAN FRANCISCO — Cal State Monterey Bay missed out on another chance to clinch the CCAA North Division title Saturday night, this time with a 25–20, 25–21, 25–18 loss at San Francisco State in The Swamp.

CSUMB (15–8, 10–6 CCAA) still holds a 1–match lead over Cal State East Bay with two matches to play next weekend.

After grabbing an early lead in the first set, the Otters played from behind for the rest of the match. Although the Otters never let SFSU run away, they couldn't quite rein the Gators in late in any of the three sets.

Jenna Tobin (Modesto/Gregori HS) and Chandler McKean (Visalia/Redwood HS) led the offense with eight kills apiece. Erica Chapa (San Benito HS/Gavilan College) added a team–high four blocks to a 25–assists, 11–dig double–double.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… SFSU began the third set with a 10–4 run. The Otters never got closer then five points the rest of the way.

NOT AT YOUR SERVICE… The Otters entered the weekend ranked No. 17 nationally in service aces per set. They managed just four aces in eight sets this weekend, including three Saturday at San Francisco State.

A SIX PACK FOR McKEAN… With three block assists Saturday night, Chandler McKean moved up to No. 6 on the Otter list for block assists in a season with 68. She also moved up to No. 15 on the list for total blocks with 75.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… KILLS: Chandler McKean/Jenna Tobin 8; BLOCKS: Erica Chapa 4; ACES: Erica Chapa/Ala Olson/Malia Tuatagaloa 1; ASSISTS: Erica Chapa 25; DIGS: Erica Chapa 11.

THE LAST WORD… "I'm really disappointed in the team that I saw tonight. We are learning some important lessons right now and I know we will grow from them, but we need to get back to who we are if we want to make an impact in the postseason." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host Cal Poly Pomona Friday (Nov. 2) and Cal State San Bernardino (Nov. 3). First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m. both nights.
