SEASIDE, Calif. — With three weeks to go until the NCAA determines the 64 teams that will compete for the NCAA Division II Volleyball national championship, Cal State Monterey Bay grabbed the No. 9 spot in the first of three in–season West Region rankings, the NCAA released Wednesday. The Otters are in the regional rankings for the first time since holding the No. 6 spot on Nov. 3, 2010.
The top eight teams in the final regional poll on Nov. 11 will advance to the NCAA West Regional.
CSUMB (15–6, 10–4 CCAA) already has ensured itself a second consecutive postseason appearance by clinching a spot in the CCAA Championship Tournament. The Otters have four regular season matches plus the CCAA Tournament to try and pass one or more teams and earn their first–ever trip to the NCAA Volleyball Tournament.
Of course, winning the CCAA Tournament would bring with it an automatic bid to the big dance.
"We are excited for this ranking but we know there is a lot left for us to work on and some tough matches ahead," says CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart. "We will continue to focus on our process, one day, one match at a time."
CSUMB carries a school–record 9–match winning streak into this weekend's action at Cal State East Bay (Friday) and San Francisco State (Saturday). The Otters can clinch the CCAA North Division title with a win over East Bay.
The Otters return home to close the regular season against No. 2 Cal State San Bernardino and No. 4 Cal Poly Pomona Nov. 2–3.
