Tale Of Two Halves Doesn’t End Well

Otters shoot 52 percent in first half but can't maintain pace in 59-49 loss at Sonoma

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. — Friday's Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball game was a classic tale of two halves. Unfortunately for the Otters, their strong first half couldn't overcome a better second half by Sonoma State as the Seawolves rallied for a 59–49 win in The Wolves Den.

The Otters started the game behind the eight ball when leading scorer Aubri Smith (Buena HS/Ventura College) didn't dress due to a minor injury. Nevertheless, CSUMB led by as many as 12 points in the first half behind a 52 percent shooting effort in the period.

But playing without one of the CCAA's top point guards really took its toll after the intermission. CSUMB turned the ball over on six of its first seven possessions of the third quarter, allowing Sonoma to take its first lead since the game's opening moments. Things got worse in the fourth quarter as the Otters scored just two points in the first eight minutes of the period and the Seawolves cruised down the stretch to the win.

Courtney Keaton (Bishop Montgomery HS) just missed her sixth double–double of the season but did pull down double–digit rebounds, finishing with nine points and 14 boards. Jessie Evans (Arnold/Harte HS) led the offense with a career–high 10 points.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a Jessica Mitz jumper gave Sonoma a 57–41 lead with 2:12 remaining.

A TALE OF TWO HALVES… The Otters shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) in the first half, their best shooting half of the season. On the flip side, they shot just 28.0 percent (7-of-25) in the second half.

A REBOUNDING 6–PACK… With 14 boards Friday night, Courtney Keaton jumped Julie Heurung (416) and Johanna Mahoney (421) to take sole possession of the No. 6 spot on the Otter career rebounding list with 424. Next up is Brittani Jefferson in the No. 5 spot with 444.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jessie Evans 10; REBOUNDS: Courtney Keaton 14; ASSISTS: Courtney Keaton/Jordanna Price/Alexa Sperling 2; BLOCKS: Alexa Sperling 1; STEALS: Camille Parker 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their short tour of the San Francisco Bay area by playing at San Francisco State Saturday. The women will tip-off at 5:30 p.m. and the men will tip-off at 7:30 p.m.
