Game Recap: Women's Basketball | | By Kevin Gilmore (@OtterKevin)

Cold Shooting Costly in 57-49 Loss

Otters shoot 25 percent from the floor to mar otherwise solid effort

SEASIDE, Calif. — So many things went right for the Cal State Monterey Bay women's basketball team Saturday against visiting Cal State San Marcos. The Otters collected more rebounds, more assists, more steals and fewer turnovers while attempting 25 more shots than the Cougars.

But CSUMB shot just 25 percent from the floor. That stat that proved fatal in 57–49 loss to the Cougars in The Kelp Bed.

The Otters raced to a 16–5 lead in the first quarter and led 19–12 entering the second. But they managed just five points in the second quarter to allow San Marcos to tie the game at 24–24.

The teams played through six ties and seven lead changes in the second half until a Kaitlyn Reina layup gave San Marcos a 48–47 lead it wouldn't relinquish. The Otters managed just an Alexa Sperling (Clovis/Buchanan HS) layup with 2:37 to play over the final 7:53 of regulation.

Brianna Tucker (Clovis North HS) led a balanced Otter ledger with 11 points. Courtney Keaton (Bishop Montgomery HS) and Camille Parker (Alta Loma HS) led all rebounders with eight rebounds apiece.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Savannah Camp grabbed a crafty offensive rebound off a Brianna Porter missed free throw with 28 seconds remaining. The Cougars dribbled out the clock from there.
ON THE DOWN LOW… The five points CSUMB scored in the third quarter are the fifth fewest ever scored by the Otters in a quarter.

HOT OUTSIDE, COLD INSIDE… Despite unseasonably warm weather outside o

n a perfect Monterey Bay afternoon, the Otters shot a chilly 25 percent for the game. It marked the fifth time CSUMB has shot less than 30 percent in a game this season, tying the school record.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Brianna Tucker 11; REBOUNDS: Courtney Keaton/Camille Parker 8; ASSISTS: Brianna Tucker 3; BLOCKS: Alexa Sperling 2; STEALS: Emily Hardin 3.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters head to the other Bay area for a pair of games next weekend beginning Friday (Jan. 19) at Sonoma State. Tip-off will be at 5:30 p.m as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
