Slow Start Proves Costly At No. 22 San Bernardino

Friday’s 5–match marathon takes toll in 3–set loss to Coyotes

SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. — Coming off its first 5–set match of the season Friday night, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team got off to slow start Saturday and never got over the hump in a 25–17, 25–17, 25–18 loss to No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino in Coussoulis Arena. CSUMB (8–4, 2–2 CCAA) saw its brief 2–match win streak snapped.

San Bernardino (7–5, 3–1) sprinted to a 12–4 lead in the first set as the Otters looked to find their legs after Friday's marathon win at Cal Poly Pomona. By the second set, the Otter ready to go toe-to-toe with the Coyotes. This time, however, San Bernardino finished fast, ending the set on an 8–0 run to break a 17–17 tie take a 2–0 lead.

The final set followed the pattern of the second, with the Coyotes finally subduing the pesky Otters with a match–ending 5–1 run.

After placing three attackers in double figures Friday night, the Otters managed to get only Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) (10 kills) there In San Bernardino.

The Match Was Over When… an Alexis Cardoza ace capped an 8–0 run that ended the second set and gave the Coyotes a 2–0 lead in the match.

Hitting Low… The Otters are hitting at a school–record .268 clip through 12 matches. But they couldn't match that pace Saturday, hitting a season–low .170 at San Bernardino. It marked just the second time the Otters hit less than .200 this season.

Leaders Of The Pack… POINTS: Maddy Underwood 11.0; KILLS: Maddy Underwood 10; BLOCKS: Amber Tygart 3; ACES: Kyra Galloway/Maddy Underwood 1; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 15.

The Last Word… "I was really disappointed in how we played tonight. I thought we had a great game plan and showed moments of greatness, but played the jersey and played undisciplined way too often to be successful. Our middles did a great job funneling the ball but we didn't defend well enough. Maddy Underwood played a great game and played with a lot of confidence and we needed more of that from the rest of the team." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

They've Got Next… The Otters return home for a big CCAA North Division showdown with Cal State East Bay Sept. 29 in The Kelp Bed. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
