SEASIDE, Calif. — A Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball record crowd of 521 witnessed an instant classic Friday night as visiting Cal State East Bay rallied late to win a 5–set thriller in The Kelp Bed.
The 25–21, 19–25, 25–21, 13–25, 15–13 Pioneer win broke a tie for second place in the CCAA North Division and lifted East Bay to 9–4 overall and 3–2 in league action. CSUMB fell to 8–5 and 2–3.

CSUMB appeared to seize control after hitting .438 and siding out at 85 percent in a fourth set rout that leveled the match at 2–2. We beat a good team in almost every statistical category, including earned points, but lacked the poise and the confidence to finish the match.
