SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team bounced back from last week's gut–wrenching loss to East Bay with a convincing 25–23, 25–17, 25–20 win over visiting San Francisco State Friday night in The Kelp Bed. With the win, the Otters improve to 9–5 overall 3–3 in CCAA play.
The Otters grabbed early leads in all three sets, although they had to withstand a late Gator comeback in the first when a 24–18 lead shrunk to 24–23 before CSUMB secured the win. The Otters raced to 18–11 leads in both the second and third stanzas and kept SFSU at arm's length in both to finish the sweep.
CSUMB overcame a sloppy attacking first set with a more than solid finish that saw the Otters hit .279 in the second and .474 in the third to raise their CCAA leading attack percentage to .265.
Amber Tygart (Yucaipa HS) led the attack force with 12 kills and no errors in 24 swings.
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) added 12 kills and
Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) had 10 kills while hitting .360 for the match.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Paige Burrell served four consecutive points to cap a 5–0 run that gave the Otters a commanding 17–7 lead in the third set.
THEY'RE A HIT… After posting a .278 attack percentage Friday night, the Otters have now hit .250 or better eight times in 2017. That ties the record for most times hitting .250 or better in school history set by the 2009 and 2013 teams. They have 12 matches remaining to break the record.
UNDERWOOD MAKES A POINT… Maddy Underwood moved into the CSUMB career Top 10 for points Friday night. With 12 kills and a block assist (12.5 points), she now has 625.0 points, passing Kendra Miller (623.5 from 2004–07) for 10th place

THE LAST WORD… "I think the stats showed that Amber (Tygart) continues to show her dominance on the right and Anela (Visesio) did an excellent job playing controlled and poised, but, collectively, I thought our defense was what won us this game tonight." –
