Otters Earn Big 5–Set Road Win In Pomona

CSUMB completes season sweep of Broncos, improves to 8–3 overall

POMONA, Calif. — Tested in a 5–setter for the first time this season, the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team responded with a clutch 19–25, 25–19, 26–24, 20–25, 15–8 win over Cal Poly Pomona Friday night in Kellogg Gym.

CSUMB (8–3, 2–1 CCAA) won for the fourth time in five matches and completed a season sweep of Cal Poly Pomona. The Broncos fell to 5–6 and 1–2 with Friday's loss.

The Otters came up big when it counted the most, hitting .314 while saving a set point a critical third set win. Then, forced to a winner-take-all fifth for the first time in 2017, they hit .318, racing to a 10–4 lead to take control.

Senior opposite Amber Tygart (Yucaipa HS) led a trio of Otters hitters in double figures with 14 kills. Ashlynne Armstrong (Norco HS) led four back row players in double figures with a season–high 24 digs.

The Match Was Over When… consecutive kills by Maddy Underwood and Erica Chapa extended CSUMB's lead to 10–4 in the fifth set. Pomona never got closer than four points the rest of the match.

Starting Fast… At 8–3 overall, the Otters are off to the second fastest start in program history. Only the 2010 team, which started 10–1, was better through 11 matches.

Taming The Broncos… The Otters completed a season sweep of Cal Poly Pomona for the first time in program history. CSUMB defeated Pomona 25–23, 25–22, 25–18 Sept. 2 in The Kelp Bed.

The Visesio 500… Anela Visesio became the 11th Otter overall (and the second in less than a week) to join the 500 career kill club. With 10 kills Friday, Visesio now has 501 in her career. Maddy Underwood (515) joined the club last week at Cal State East Bay.

Leaders Of The Pack… POINTS: Amber Tygart 15; KILLS: Amber Tygart 14; BLOCKS: Samantha Brennan 5; ACES: Ashlynne Armstrong/Erica Chapa/Maddy Underwood 1; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 24.

The Last Word… That was a great win for our program—on the road—in five. I couldn't be more proud of the poise with which these young women played. We didn't play our best, but we really saw our work in the weight room and conditioning being used down the stretch. That's a huge part of who we are and it was great to see. Amber Tygart played tremendous tonight and her confidence was evident." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

They've Got Next… The Otters play No. 22 Cal State San Bernardino Saturday night in Coussoulis Arena at 7 p.m.
