SEASIDE, Calif. — After clinching a series win with two wins on Saturday, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team had hopes of a series sweep over Cal State L.A. on Sunday at the Otter Sports Complex.
It was CSUMB who scored first on Sunday after coming from behind in the first two games of the series. The Otters jumped on CSULA starting pitcher Greg Humbert by plating a run in the first inning, two runs in the second and another run in the third to take a 4-2 lead.
Shades of yesterday appeared as the Golden Eagles threatened in the eighth inning as they attempted a comeback by plating a run and closing the deficit to one run, 4-3. However,
Kyle Narahara came in with two outs a shut the door on the eighth.
A.C. Nunez knocked in an insurance in run in the bottom of the eighth before Narahara completed the 4-out save with a 1-2-3 ninth inning, giving CSUMB a 5-3 victory.
LEADING OFF... This marks the first CCAA series sweep for the Otters as they move to a 15-9, 8-5 record. The Otters sit a half game ahead of Cal State East Bay for second place in the CCAA North Division.
ON DECK... Nunez had the series of his career at the plate going 7-for-12 (.583) at the plate with two doubles, two runs scored, and three RBI. He knocked in what proved to be the winning run in the 6-5 game two victory and gave the Otters an insurance run in today's 5-3 win with an RBI in the eighth inning. Nunez posted a slugging percentage of .750 and an on-base percentage of .643.
IN THE HOLE...Narahara recorded his fifth save of the season and his second of the series on Sunday afternoon. It marked the first time the senior closer appeared twice in a series. He did not allow a hit in two a one-third innings of work and recorded four strikeouts bringing his season ERA to dismal 0.87.
