SEASIDE, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team needed two epic comeback wins on Saturday afternoon to notch a doubleheader sweep of Cal State L.A. at the Otter Sports Complex.
CSUMB was down 6-0 early in game one before recording innings of four, one and two runs to a 7-6 lead in the seventh inning. The Golden Eagles tied the game in the top of the eighth, but the Otters got the run back in the bottom of the ninth on a clutch 2-out single by
Max Sanderson that plated
Myles Hager en route to a 8-7 win in game one.
Monterey Bay let CSULA off to a fast start again in game two as Sean Watkins hit his second 2-run home run of the day to give the Golden Eagles a 2-0 edge and eventually a 3-0 lead. However the Otters found their offense in the middle innings, plating one run in the fifth and three in the sixth to capture a 4-3 lead. CSULA came back with two of their own in the seventh, but a run in the bottom of the seventh by the Otters tied it at 5-5. The clutch 2-out hitting once again came through as
A.C. Nunez delivered a 2-out single to score
Zakry Taylor in a 6-5 win.
LEADING OFF... The bull pen was today's story as five relievers combine to allow three earned runs in 10 innings of work.
Colton Fletcher, Kyle Brown, and
Kyle Narahara did not allow any runs.
Drew Kozain (2-0) and Brown (1-2) earned wins while Narahara earned his fourth save.
ON DECK... The Otters closed the gap on the all-time record vs CSULA, moving to within seven games at 14-21
IN THE HOLE... With two wins today, CSUMB is now 14-9, 7-5 CCAA and avoids going under .500 in conference play.
