LA JOLLA, Calif. — After splitting Saturday's doubleheader against the eighth-ranked UCSD Tritons, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team looked for a key series win on Sunday. The Otters and Tritons were deadlocked in a pitchers duel until the fifth inning when CSUMB capitalized on a wild pitch that allowed
Jacob Tonascia to score from third, giving MB a 1-0 lead.
However, the Tritons would fight back and take advantage of some key Otters errors to plate four runs in the bottom of the sixth to take a 4-1 edge. The hosts found pay dirt six times in the eighth inning eventually handing the Otters a 10-1 loss.
LEADING OFF... Ryan Arambula made the start for the Otters and pitched well, giving up five hits and no runs with four strikeouts. He was faced with the no-decision
ON DECK... The Otters are now 3-3 on the season against nationally-ranked teams. They took two-of-three from Cal Poly Pomona in a nonconference series earlier this season. The Otters went 1-2 against now fifth-ranked Azusa Pacific to start the season, but the Cougars were unranked in the preseason poll
IN THE HOLE... The Otters now sport an 12-9, 5-5 CCAA record.
THE LAST WORD... "We imploded during the sixth inning which ultimately cost the game. We beat ourselves and that disappointing. There were times in this series that we played some of our best baseball of the season. However, we need to play better in the late innings and we need to make plays when the game in on the line. We will get back to work this week and get ready for a very good Cal State L.A. team."
-Head Coach Walt White
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... Monterey Bay will face its third CCAA South Division opponent in a row when Cal State L.A. visits the Otter Sports Complex on March 18-19. First pitch of Saturday's doubleheader is set for noon.
GO OTTERS!
