LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team traveled to UC San Diego on Saturday to take on the eighth-ranked Tritons in doubleheader action at Triton Ballpark.
CSUMB needed extra innings to beat UCSD in game one as they came back late in the game after trailing 3-6.
Nick Vigo drove in the tying run in the eighth inning and what proved to be the winning run later in the 10th.
Kyle Narahara (W, 2-0) closed the door with 1.2 innings of work as the Otters handed UCSD their second CCAA loss of the season by a score of 8-6.
CSUMB took a 2-0 lead into the seventh inning, but errors would hurt CSUMB as the Tritons plated three runs in the bottom of the seventh inning. UCSD's Blaine Jarvis (W, 1-0) shut down the Otter offense with four innings of scoreless relief work.
LEADING OFF... Darren Kriz put together the best combine day at the plate, going 6-for-8 with two runs scored.
ON DECK... The Otters are now 3-2 on the season against nationally-ranked teams. They took two-of-three from Cal Poly Pomona in a nonconference series earlier this season. The Otters went 1-2 against now fifth-ranked Azusa Pacific to start the season, but the Cougars were unranked in the preseason poll
IN THE HOLE... The Otters now sport an 12-8, 5-4 CCAA good for third place in the early season conference standings
THE LAST WORD... "We competed all day and we put ourselves in position to take both games. But you need to play a full nine to earn it, and we had one inning late in game two where we gave them extra outs. Ultimately, that cost us the game. Each game was tightly contested and we fully expect another tight on tomorrow."
-Head Coach Walt White
THEY'VE GOT NEXT... The Otters will wrap up the 3-game series at UCSD on Sunday, March 12. First pitch at Triton Ballpark is set for noon.
GO OTTERS!
