ALAMEDA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team hit the road for the first time in the 2017 season to face off against Holy Names University on Tuesday night at College of Alameda.
Riley Roberts (Yorba Linda HS) shined at the plate, driving in a team-leading two RBIs during a 2-for-3 evening at the dish. Roberts also scored a run, making him responsible for half of the runs in the 6-3 win.
Ryan Arambula (Bell Gardens HS) made his first start of the year, but it was reliever
Danny Thomas (Saint Bonaventure HS) who earned the win after two innings of shutout ball.
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) earned his first save of the season.
THE GAME WAS OVER WHEN: Reliever
Stevan Zaharias (Brentwood HS) got three outs in a row, including two strikeouts, to hold HNU to two runs in the eighth inning.
LEADING OFF: The Otters are 1-0 on the road but face a tall task this weekend when they travel to battle sixth-ranked Cal Poly Pomona for a 3-game set beginning Thursday, Feb. 16
ON DECK: The busy box scores continue as Head Coach
Walt White used 16 position players and seven pitchers in tonight's victory
IN THE HOLE: Through the first six games,
Jacob Tonascia (San Benito HS) has primarily played first base. While he got the start at first tonight, he also saw time on the mound throwing a hitless sixth inning.
THE LAST WORD: "Tonight's win was a team effort. Numerous position players contributed with some timely hitting and we played solid defense for the most part. But out pitching was the difference in the game.
Arambula, (Alex) Van Es, Tonascia, and (Drew) Kozain got their first action of the season and all were solid.
Danny Thomas had another good outing and
Narahara earned his first save of the season with an impressive inning of work. We will travel to Pomona this weekend for our first road series of the year, and we will need to be at our best."
-Head Coach Walt White

Game one is the only guaranteed contest to take place as a weather system is forecasted for Friday.
