SEASIDE, Calif. — After trailing by as many as 17 points in the first half, the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team saw a methodical comeback end one shot short in a 73–70 loss to Saint Martin's University Tuesday night in The Kelp Bed.
CSUMB closed to within one point twice in the final four minutes. It had six separate opportunities to tie the game, including four in the final 29 seconds. But a trifecta of 3–point attempts couldn't find their mark before the clock finally struck all naughts, allowing the Saints to escape.
Freshman
Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) and sophomore
Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 12 points apiece. Senior
Brian Garrett (San Carlos/St. Francis HS) came off the bench to add 10 points while
Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS) grabbed a game–high seven rebounds despite missing most of the first half with foul trouble.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… a
Mateo Jones 3–point attempt found only iron with four seconds remaining.
KNOCK THE BLOCK… Gregg Polosky, CSUMB's career blocked shot leader entering the season, earned his first two blocks of 2017–18 Tuesday night. He now has 62 in his two–plus Otter seasons.
50–50 CHANCE… The Otters shot exactly 50 percent (30–of–60) from the floor Tuesday night, their best shooting night of the young season.
COMING ON STRONG… The Otter continue to show their mettle as a strong second half team. CSUMB out–scored Saint Martin's 36–27 in the second half. The Otters have out–scored opponents in the second half in three of five games this season.
A THIEF IN THE NIGHT… Mateo Jones added three steals to his account Tuesday night, vaulting him to No. 7 on the Otter career steals list with 75. Alex Fertig owns the CSUMB career record with 108 steals from 2013–16.
