SEASIDE, Calif. — The teams played through eight ties and nine lead changes, but in the end, it came down to who could convert from the stripe. Visiting Sonoma State took that battle and, with it, the war, in a 72–64 win over Cal State Monterey Bay Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.
Sonoma got to the line almost twice as often as the Otters—32 attempts to 17—and made 14 more free throws to overcome CSUMB's advantages in rebounding (37–33) and 3–point shooting (8–4). Nevertheless, the game was still tied at 62–62 with less than three minutes remaining and was in doubt until Nicolis Armani made three free throws in the final 29 seconds.
Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) led a balanced Otter offense with 14 points. Freshman
Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) added 12 points.
Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) pulled down a game high nine boards.
THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jordan Fleck pulled down a rebound for Sonoma with 13 seconds remaining and the Seawolves leading 72–64.
A LITTLE WINDEX, PLEASE… Mateo Jones continues to clean the glass with the best of them in the CCAA. His game–high nine rebounds Saturday night leave him ranked No. 4 in the CCAA at 8.3 rebounds per game.
BACK ON THE BLOCKS… After not recording a block in the first four games this season,
Gregg Polosky was up to his old tricks this week. He had two blocks Tuesday versus Saint Martin's University and two more Saturday night against Sonoma State. That brings his career total to a CSUMB all–time best 64 through 2+ seasons as an Otter.
