Sapwell, Bouyea Have Big Games In Win

Koen Sapwell scores 22, Jonquis Bouyea has double-double in 80-72 win at Dominican

SEASIDE, Calif. — Huge nights from freshman Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia/Trinity College Gawler) and senior Jonquis Bouyea (Seaside HS) led Cal State Monterey Bay to its second road win of the season in an 80–72 victory at Dominican University Sunday night in The Conlan Center.

Sapwell recorded the first 20–point game of his young career by scoring 22. Bouyea, meanwhile, completed the first double–double of his collegiate career by finishing with 10 points and a career–high 10 rebounds.

The teams played to a 29–29 tie in the first half. After five lead changes in the first five minutes after intermission, Sapwell knocked down a 3–pointer to give the Otters a 41–38 they edge would guard jealously over the final 15 minutes.

Another Sapwell three–ball gave CSUMB its first 10–point lead at 74–64 with just more than two minutes remaining. The Otters twice led by 11 down the stretch before the settling on the 8–point final margin.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jahvon Johnson grabbed the rebound of a missed Penguin 3–pointer with 15 seconds remaining.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, 20–POINT EDITION… Koen Sapwell joins Jahvon Johnson and Mateo Jones as Otters who have scored 20 or more points in a game so far this season.

WELCOME TO THE CLUB, DOUBLE–DOUBLE EDITION… Jonquis Bouyea joins Mateo Jones as the only Otters who have posted double–doubles so far this season. He joins Jones and Gregg Polosky as Otters who have posted double–doubles in collegiate play.

A THIEF IN THE NIGHT… Mateo Jones collected five steals Sunday night for his second 5–steal game of the season. He now leads the CCAA by averaging 2.6 steals per game.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Koen Sapwell 22; REBOUNDS: Jonquis Bouyea 10; ASSISTS: Jonquis Bouyea 4; BLOCKS: Mateo Jones 1; STEALS: Mateo Jones 5.

THE LAST WORD… "After playing maybe our worst half of basketball in the first, we played easily our best in the second. It was great to see the guys put their egos aside and take joy in their teammates success." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters return home to host a pair of CCAA games in the coming week, starting with a Thursday (Nov. 30) meeting with Humboldt State. Tip-off will be 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
