Big Games Lead To Big OT Win

Jones, Polosky record double-doubles in 87-81 win over Humboldt State

SEASIDE, Calif. — Big games up and down the roster paved the way for a thrilling win as Cal State Monterey Bay out–lasted Humboldt State 87–81 in overtime Thursday night in The Kelp Bed.

CSUMB (3–5, 2–2 CCAA) got a 19–point, 13–rebound double–double from Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) and a 14–point, 15–rebound double–double from Gregg Polosky (San Ramon Valley HS), but the big plays didn't stop there. Sophomore guard Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) added 19 points. Jonquis Bouyea (Seaside HS) scored 13 and freshman Josh Kollman (Bothell, Wash./Bothell HS) chipped in 10.

Both teams appeared to take control late in the second half. Humboldt grabbed the biggest lead for either team at 65–56 with 6:27 to play. But a 14–2 Otter run put CSUMB back on top inside the final minute.

A Jalen Terry 3–pointer tied the game at 71–71 with 13 seconds remaining to force overtime. Humboldt then scored the first four points over the extra period before the Otters made the game–winning surge.

Johnson scored six consecutive points to put CSUMB in front to stay at 79–77. A crafty Koen Sapwell (Adelaide, South Australia/Trinity College Gawler) layup and a pair of Jones free throws capped the 10–0 Otter run that made the lead 83–77 with less than 30 second to remaining.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jonquis Bouyea made the first of two free throws with five seconds remaining to extend CSUMB's lead to 86–81.

DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLES… Mateo Jones (19 points/13 rebounds) and Gregg Polosky (14 points/15 rebounds) both recorded double–doubles Thursday night. It's the first time two Otters recorded double–doubles in the same game since Polosky and Julien Ducree turned the trick in the 2016–17 season opener against Concordia–Portland.

GOING HIGH FOR THE REBOUNDS… Gregg Polosky (15 rebounds) and Mateo Jones (13 rebounds) each set career highs in rebounding in Thursday win over Humboldt State.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson/Mateo Jones 19; REBOUNDS: Gregg Polosky 15; ASSISTS: Jonquis Bouyea 4; BLOCKS: Gregg Polosky 2; STEALS: Mateo Jones 3.

THE LAST WORD… "These guys deserve a ton of credit for their effort tonight. A lot of things didn't go their way, but they played with a tremendous amount of heart and found a way to win the game." – CSUMB Head Coach Isaac Williams

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters conclude their brief homestand by hosting Cal State East Bay Saturday (Dec. 2). Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the nightcap of men's/women's doubleheader action.
