Big Nights By Johnson, Jones Not Enough

Jahvon Johnson scores 21, Mateo Jones grabs 16 boards in 76-54 loss to East Bay

SEASIDE, Calif. — Saturday proved to be so a tough night for the Cal State Monterey Bay men's basketball team that even career nights from Jahvon Johnson (Clovis North HS) and Mateo Jones (Victorville/Silverado HS) couldn't prevent visiting Cal State East Bay from taking a 76–54 decision in The Kelp Bed.

Johnson led all scorers with a career–high 21 points. Jones, meanwhile recorded his second consecutive double–double, finishing with 11 points and a career–high 16 rebounds.

But the Otters shot a season–low 34 percent from the floor, a season–low 17 percent from 3–point range and turned the ball over a season–high 20 times. That cocktail was more than enough to allow East Bay to roll to a 19–point halftime lead that wouldn't be threatened over the final 20 minutes.

THE GAME WAS STATISTICALLY OVER WHEN… Jelani Mitchell knocked down a free throw to give East Bay a 69–49 lead with 4:08 remaining.

DOUBLE DOUBLE–DOUBLES… Mateo Jones complete his second consecutive double–double (and his third of the season) with his 11–point, 16–rebound effort Saturday versus East Bay. He is fourth player in Otter history to do it and the first to post consecutive double–doubles since Joe Mitchell turned the trick at Humboldt State and Cal State L.A. Jan. 3–10, 2009.

TAKE THEM, THEY'RE FREE… Led by a 10–for–11 night from Jahvon Johnson, the Otters shot a season–best 87.5 percent (14–of–16) from the free–throw line Saturday night versus East Bay.

ON THE BLOCKS… Junior Gregg Polosky continues to be the king of denial, blocking three more shots Saturday versus East Bay. He now has seven blocks in his last three games, bringing him up to No. 4 in the conference with 10 blocks on the season.

ON THE BLOCKS II… Gregg Polosky's three blocks Saturday night extend his Otter career record to 70 blocked shots. The next closest Otters are Jay Demaestri and Kris Gallop with 46 blocks apiece.

LEADERS OF THE RAFT… POINTS: Jahvon Johnson 21; REBOUNDS: Mateo Jones 16; ASSISTS: Jonquis Bouyea 2; BLOCKS: Gregg Polosky 3; STEALS: Koen Sapwell 2.

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters hit the road for a single game next weekend: A CCAA tilt at UC San Diego Friday (Dec. 8). Tip-off will be at 7:30 p.m. as the opener of men's/women's doubleheader action.
