SAN MARCOS, Calif. — Playing three close sets wasn't enough for the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team, which saw Cal State San Marcos take a tight 25–20, 25–23, 25–22 victory Saturday night in the CSUSM Sports Center.
The Otters got big offensive nights once again from
Maddy Underwood (16 kills) and
Anela Visesio (14 kills). But San Marcos did a good job limiting the rest of the CSUMB offense, which combined for just 14 more kills.
Junior libero
Ashlynne Armstrong had a big night anchoring the Otter back row. She collected 23 digs, the sixth most in a 3–set match in CSUMB history. Armstrong and Underwood also had strong night from the service line. Armstrong served three aces and Underwood added two more.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… Faith Fortune's kill ended CSUMB's final run and made it 23–21 San Marcos in the third set.
LENDING A HELPING HAND… Junior setter
Erica Chapa dished 42 assists Saturday night in San Marcos. She just missed Nikki Sanderson's school record for assists in a match of 43 set on Sept. 9, 2006. As a team, the Otters passed 44 assists Saturday at San Marcos. That matches the ninth most assists in a 3–set match in program history.
AMBER TIES ASHEN… With two block assists Saturday night,
Amber Tygart tied Julia Ashen (2011–14) for No. 8 on the CSUMB career list for total blocks at 164. Next up is Brittany Etchings (2004–07) at 172.
