LA JOLLA, Calif. — The Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team couldn't sustain a strong start as CCAA South Division leader UC San Diego rallied to take a 21–25, 25–18, 25–14, 25–12 win Friday night in RIMAC Arena.
Senior outside hitter
Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) reached double figures for the fourth consecutive match by finishing with a team–leading 17 kills.
Anela Visesio (Seaside HS) added 13 kills.
The rest of the Otter offense made nearly as many errors (8) as kills (9), however, as CSUMB couldn't duplicate its early success.
Four Otter aces in the opening set helped keep the UCSD offense out of rhythm, allowing CSUMB to jump to the early lead. Once the Tritons got their serve receive in order, however, they took control and never let the Otters back in the match.
THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… A Marie Paris service aced capped a 7–1 UCSD run to open Set 4. The Otters never got closer than five points the rest of the way.
MOVING ON UP… Maddy Underwood passed Melanie Lashbrook (2008–11) for No. 8 on the CSUMB career kills list Friday night. Her 17 kills at UCSD give her 643 in 2–plus seasons, passing Lashbrook's total of 626.
JUST ONE AWAY… With 13 kills Friday night,
Anela Visesio moved to within one kill of 600 for her career. She is looking to become just the 10th player in Otter history to reach 600 career kills.
