Friday Marathon Takes Its Toll In Saturday Loss

Otter comeback stalls late in 4–set loss to Cal State L.A.

OTTERS vs. L.A. HIGHLIGHTS

SEASIDE, Calif. — Friday night's 5–set marathon against Cal State Dominguez Hills clearly took its toll on the Cal State Monterey Bay volleyball team in a 25–19, 25–17, 17–25, 25–18 loss to Cal State L.A. Saturday night in The Kelp Bed.

Both teams gave spirited performances early with the first set mostly a 1–point affair through an 18–18 tie. But L.A.'s superior athleticism began to show through as Otter energy waned in a 7–1 Golden Eagle finishing charge.

L.A. pulled away again late in the second set for a comfortable 25–17 win before the Otters caught their second wind during the intermission. A steady performance by CSUMB took advantage of rash of Golden Eagle miscues, allowing the Otters to roll to a comfortable 25–17 win of their own.

But the Otters finally ran out of gas midway through the fourth when Alejandra Negron followed her own kill with a 5–point service run that put L.A. ahead to stay.

Maddy Underwood (Spokane, Wash./Mead HS) and Amber Tygart (Yucaipa HS) led CSUMB with 13 and 10 kills respectively. Tygart added a match–high five blocks.

THE MATCH WAS OVER WHEN… three consecutive kills by Karla Santos gave L.A. a 20–13 lead in the fourth set.

THE 700 CLUB, PART I… Maddy Underwood became the ninth player in Otter history to amass 700 career points (now 708.5) with 13.5 points Saturday.

THE 700 CLUB, PART II… Erica Chapa became the seventh setter in Otter history to reach 700 assists in a season (now 722) with 34 Saturday.

ON THE BLOCK… Amber Tygart collected five blocks Saturday to pass Janai Johnson (2012, 14) for No. 9 on the CSUMB career blocks list with 162.

LEADERS OF THE PACK… POINTS: Maddy Underwood 13.5; KILLS: Maddy Underwood 13; BLOCKS: Amber Tygart 5; ACES: Paige Burrell 1; DIGS: Ashlynne Armstrong 11.

THE LAST WORD… "It's important for us to (get back to) playing our way and get the focus back on one game at a time. We just need to get back to work on Monday and get back to ball control and out-of-system and being disciplined on our side." — CSUMB Head Coach Moe Melhart

THEY'VE GOT NEXT… The Otters begin a key 4–match roadtrip Friday (Oct. 27) at UC San Diego. First serve in RIMAC Arena is scheduled for 7 p.m.
