SEASIDE, Calif. -- The Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team clinched their second consecutive CCAA Tournament berth by winning the second game of Saturday's doubleheader against Cal State East Bay. CSUMB needed to win one of the final four games in order to clinch and after losing game one today (3-4 in 10 innings), the Otter offense bounced back nicely with a 9-2 victory in the night cap.
Despite allowing three runs in the fourth inning to the Pioneers in game one, the Otters were able to comeback thanks to solo home runs by
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) and
Matt Urakami (Branham HS) that brought CSUMB all the back into a 3-3 tie after the fifth inning. All was quiet for a while as CSUMB reliever
Jacob Cox (Madera, Calif. / Liberty HS) had arguably his best outing of the season, throwing six innings of one run ball.
However, that one run was enough for East Bay to get the win as the Pioneers broke through in the 10th inning to go ahead 4-3. Andrew Fernandez shut down CSUMB in the bottom of the 10th to get the save.
Game two, however, was a different story. The offense was firing on all cylinders as the Otters were able to score in every inning in game two en route to a 9-2 victory. CSUMB got big time hits from
Kevin Davidson (Yucaipa HS) who had two RBIs in a 2-for-4 day at the plate. Duer smacked his second home run of the day, setting the single-season home run record with 11. Also joining the home run train was
Myles Hager (Chaminade College Prep) who hit his seventh big fly of 2016.
Bryan Bostjancic (Sir Francis Drake HS) also knocked in two runs and scored twice in a solid 2-for-3 day of work.
While
Jeffery Ahearn (Anderson HS) got the start, it was senior
Jake Chutney (Trabuco Hills HS) who got the win as the reliever game in for four innings of 2-hit, shutout baseball, earning his third win of 2016 (3-0).
With the win CSUMB moved to 31-16, 21-15 CCAA and earn a berth in the CCAA Championship Tournament beginning on Wednesday, May 11 in Stockton, Calif. CSUMB also puts themselves in a position to win the CCAA North Division with a win tomorrow. Monterey Bay and Cal State East Bay will play the series finalé in hayward Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
