SAN MARCOS, Calif. -- After putting up a total of 29 runs in Saturday's doubleheader, the Cal State Monterey Bay baseball team picked up right where they left off, scoring 10 more in Sunday's shutout victory over Cal State San Marcos. The Otter pitching staff was lights out as well as CSUMB recorded a combine shutout for the first time this season in the 10-0 win.
With a 1-0 lead,
Matt Urakami (Branham HS) showed off his lumber with two outs in the fourth inning by smacking his first home run of the season. Not only was it his first big fly of the season, it was a grand slam that increased the Otter lead to 5–0.
Hayden Duer (Davis HS) wanted some of the RBI action and did so by driving in two runs, one in the fifth and one in the seventh to give CSUMB a 8-0 lead after
Justin Flores (Clovis West HS) scored on an error.
The scoring was not done, however, as
Will Rosado (Clovis East HS) drove his sixth home run of the season over the left field wall for two runs, giving the Otters a large 10-0 lead.
With the victory, the Otter offense has put up double figure runs in 12 games this season, including the last three in a row.
Not only was the offense on fire over the weekend, but the pitching backed it up on Sunday.
Jeffery Ahearn (Anderson HS) got the start and the win, moving to 2–1 on the season. The freshman left-hander allowed two hits in three innings of work, including two strikeouts.
Jake Chutney (Trabuco Hills HS) pitched the second third of the game and allowed just four hits and no runs.
Drew Kozain (Redondo Union High School), Jacob Cox (Liberty HS), and
Kyle Narahara (Castro Valley HS) all threw one scoreless inning in relief on the way to CSUMB fifth win in six games.
In Addition to Urakami's four RBIs on the grand slam, Duer and Rosado kicked in two RBIs on their own. Clinton Perez and L.A. Gamo had the most offense against the Otters on Sunday, recording two hits.
CSUMB is now 31-14, 20-13 CCAA and are once again atop the CCAA North Division. The Otters will play a pivotal 4-game series against Cal State East Bay beginning on May 6th in Hayward. Monterey Bay will get Saturday's doubleheader portion of the home-and-home series at the Otter Sports Complex. MB can clinch a playoff spot with a win and a Sonoma State loss to SF State on Friday.
